| Maryland Governor's wife works for Comcast
While looking over the Baltimore Sun's web story about Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich vetoing a $135 million corporate tax package, I saw this interesting tidbit. quote: The advocacy group Progressive Maryland raised ethical questions yesterday about Ehrlich deciding on the tax bill, noting that Ehrlich's wife, Kendel Ehrlich, is an employee for Comcast; in a story on Delaware loopholes published last month, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Comcast uses 400 Delaware subsidiaries to avoid taxes. Kendel Ehrlich said yesterday that she was not familiar with the tax issue and had not talked to her husband about it. »www.sunspot.net/business/bal-te.···eadlines

I see nothing wrong with avoiding taxes legally. There are a lot of Comcast practices I don't like, but avoiding taxes is not one of them. Why should any entity pay more taxes than absolutely necessary? |

Check again. Most credit card companies and many financial institutions are registered Delaware corporations to avoid taxes.

Everyone incorporates in Delaware for this reason. It's nothing new. -- "It's ironic that a computer manufacturer is teaching the record industry the next step, and so far, that's what's happening." -- Singer-songwriter Janis Ian, on Apple's iTunes service. Take notes, RIAA. Take lots of notes. |

That's why every Fortune 500 company does business in Delaware. |

| I live in Delaware, in school i was told that 75% of the Fortune 500 have their corporate offices in Delaware due to the favorable banking laws. (but who can trust that) The only tax advantage that I know of is the free Sales Tax, everything else is raised to make up for it. |

It's a fact that Delaware caters to businesses; they'll never institute sales tax. Compared to other states they are among the highest in income taxes, so the people who live in DE pay the difference. |

That works out well for us in neighboring states, who can drive to DE to make large purchases, tax free =)

| reply to newview I think you would find that every person living in the US could be linked to a big business in one way or another. I mean politicians aren't raised in some isolation sphere where they are hermetically sealed off from the rest of society until they run for office.
If theres inappropriate dealings they will be found out eventually.
And as for voting up threads, you may want to read the FAQ entry about voting, before you use the feature; it doesn't hurt to know the purpose of a feature before using it. -- Infogrames != Atari |

| I agree Combat Chuck. It all comes down to how a thread can help others or has useful information. Information on routers and cable modems that don't work with the Comcast network is a vote worthy thread. Things like this and the countless "Screw Comcast" threads are not vote worthy. I just don't understand why people want to vote this crap up. Save it for the truely useful threads. -- My Domain Nightfall's Hockey and Life Journal |

| reply to newview I've noticed this too. I think people simply confuse the meaning of 'vote up'. To put it simply, if you like what someone has to say, you can give them 'Encouragement' by using the 'thumbs up' icon in their post. If you think the entire thread offers extremely useful information that pertains to the topic, above and beyond the normal conversation, then you would vote it up. I think a lot of people think voting up means they like what they are reading, but in this caes, I doubt very many people would care to archive the fact Comcast does business in DE like every other company.
