New Model: Westell 2200 DSL Modem

multihybrid.zip 18,311 bytes
(multihybrid.pdf)

This new model incorporates Westell's DMH Multi-Hybrid technology with Power Spectral Density (PSD) Shaping. Essentially, the analog front end of the 2200 automatically tunes itself to optimize performance on "problematic" loops (e.g. long hauls, lines with bridge-taps, etc.)

No info on availability or cost yet.

NICE!

PSD looks fascinating.

Anyone willing to place a friendly toolpoint wager that this is Verizon's new beta test modem?

I was reading a thread in the VZ forum regarding management folks being asked to try out a new modem.

Anyhow, 10 tool points says this is it!

Happy Memorial Day;
I know I could use the rest,
Sed

Oh, I bet this is the modem that some lucky VZ'ers are going to test shortly.

Verizon signed a fairly large deal with Westell to supply DSL modems and other gear, and they've standardized on this product line, so I think it would be highly unlikely that Verizon would switch vendors (although weirder things have happened...)

One of the interesting things about the DHT / PSD technology is that it requires no modification or additional equipment to the ATM-C (i.e. DSLAM) side of the circuit, so Verizon could easily deploy the 2200 modems without changes to their infrastructure.

Now, what I really wish Verizon would do is carry the "all-in-one" Westell DSL Modem + Router + 4-port Switch + Wireless Access Point and ditch the current Linksys Home Networking Kit.

If this is going to be the test modem Verizon should pick testers that are on the fringes of DSL and have had problems with the service. Reading the specifications it is supposed to help with less then perfect loops and nullify the effects of bridge tap.

The all-ways on can be tested by any one.

Hey, maybe Westell would like to test this product on a marginal phone line with a year's worth of sync, noise margin and even tone-selection data!

But I'm getting totally confused trying to decode this - perhaps marketeers are too involved. Power Spectral Density isn't new and shaping PSD is what occurs to some extent when negotiating an ADSL connection (selection of the discrete tones from the available array). The rules of PSD are defined by regulatory specifications to insure phone lines don't radiate/crosstalk. Of course, some innovative way of doing this can certainly be a breakthrough technology.

But if things work better it's a moot point. Any other speculations what's going on?

My guess: new analog front end + better signal extraction algorithms in the DSP.

I agree, Dan. Buried in the DMH blurb is the 4-Hybrid circuits, dynamically selected. I think this is a key to the technology. With DSPs it's hard to separate analog from digital anymore.

Dan, as always you crystallized the thought on everyone's mind, at least on mine. I would have very much liked to see some wireless support in the next generation of their 2x00 routers.

For those of you guys who share your homes with a four legged critter, chewed up CAT5E spans which you worked very hard to make "chew proof" eventually lead one down the path of never wanting to replace another CAT5 span as long as you live

Let's hope for a wireless solution-all-in-one in the next model. For now my D-Link AP will have to do

Best wishes,
Sed

Well I just got ahold of Westell tech support. They said the 2200 is only in the prototype stage at this point. No expected release date yet.

I asked the lady about Verizon customers testing out this new beta modem and if that was it. She said she could not say so I think that's the answer.

Ok update just got a email back from Westell sales with this response.

"For all modem pricing and availability you will have to contact Verizon
Teleproducts at 1-888-592-5358.

Thank you for your interest in Westell Products.

Westell Customer Support"

So I called Verizon and the lady I talked to was asked the question before. So she went and asked her manager and a supervisor. According to them Verizon will not be selling this model.

I think Sales people in Verizon don't know about it yet since it's in beta testing still.

Anyways thought I would post an update.

  Very funny Mr. Anonymous poster.

Lots of people here are asking where can I buy one, and you provide the useless piece of infomation:

Better information you could provide, might be "Where can we buy one of these?" We would love to hop aboard, but we can't find anyone to sell us one!
