When is Comcast gonna raise the speeds?

Is anyone other than me that is wondering WHEN comcast will upgrade the speeds? I mean 3.5down and 384 is OoooKaayy But come on. Lets see some faster tiers! Also 384 on the up is kinda slow. RCN, Optimum, RoadRunner, Worldcom, Covad all offer higher upload stream than comcast. If comcast is The industries highest Cable provider (and they are)! Why aren't the speeds leading the race? Btw most other providers don't even charge like comcast. Why are we paying so much for something less than others? What is the hold up with Getting a better service all around? I'm not complaining but get real. This company has expanded and expanded etc....They are the largest cable co. Thus shouldn't we have a Better service than the others ? Comcast does offer a good connection. But shouldn't we expect better from the industries largest NAME?!

Since XBOX Live.

We need minimum upload of 768 kbps to host a decent 16 player game.

Optimum Online cares about their residential users internet experience. I think their upload speed is 1200 kbps. I'm stuck with Comcast, but hopefully, competition will come one day.

OOL has started capping users who abuse their upload. So a Xbox live session on OOL with 16 players using a constant 768kbps would trigger the caps in some areas. Then your capped to 150kbps...so you can now host a fun 2 player game

Then there is that whole your not supposed to be running a server thing etc etc etc

How much are you willing to pay for that kind of speed?
@home used to be uncapped, look where it got them. I myself would hate to be on a node full of Xbox server hosting people, eating up every single bit of the bandwidth. I'm not sure how Xbox servers work, but majority of PC games are hosted on Commercial/Edu pipes, not residential.

Actually the Excite merger is what killed @Home, not the speeds they offered. The cable franchises set the @Home caps, not @Home. While ATTBi was uncapped, Cox for example had 3Mb caps.

True. Some reasons:
1. Most residential services do not have the upstream bandwidth required. (:) otherwise we would not have this thread)
2. Generally the latency is lower when the server is on the backbone.
3. Home service is not considered reliable.

I'm not sure what you could do if you wanted to run a XBox Live! server though. Unlike PC games, I don't know of any dedicated XBox server software that could be run co-located.

If I were into hosting game servers, I would strongly look into DSL.

If you want faster speeds then get a T3 line. If you are so unhappy with Comcast go with something else. Not to mention complaining here wont change a thing so you are barking up the wrong tree.

Geeze consider yourself lucky if you're getting 3.5/384.
(are those numbers for a regular home connection?)
I work at over 2 dozen locations throughout this area (Southeastern MA) that have Comcast,
and on a regular basis I run speed tests at all of them.
Never seen anything above approx. 1800/220.

The speeds offered aren't too bad in my opinion. 1.8/256 isn't bad at all for $45 (with cable TV). It's a better price than what is charged for Verizon DSL 1.5/128. Perhaps higher speeds on Pro would be more reasonable for the high price. Or just lower the price and leave the speeds alone. I'd pay $95 for, say, 4mbps/768k... I don't think Pro is worth it.

For the gamers:
Stop complaining. HSI isn't meant just to host servers. In fact, I don't even believe servers are allowed with Comcast. If you want a game server, rent one for a similar price.

If it makes you feel better to get it off your chest by posting it, ok. But please believe me, those of us that have been here for a while have already heard EVERYTHING you've said at least 2 dozen times. Does no good to complain, just be thankful you have what you do. As an alternative, have you tried dial-up?

you guys are too harsh ! as usual
mig288 didn't say he wanted more speed for free. i'm okay with what Comcast gives us for the money, but why shouldn't they offer a higher upload tier (for $) for those who need it. sounds like some easy profit for comcast.
i also understand about game servers and the TOS, but i think it should be a reasonable expectation for a residential service that my 12-year old should be able to host an xbox game.

If your #1 concern is "NOT" price than I would recommend Speakeasy DSL if you can get it. I have been a Comcast customer sice the @Home days and recently switched to Speakeasy DSL service because of many reasons that everyone here is familiar with. I have been with speakeasy via Covad for about a month and all I can say is I will never go back to Comcast if given a choice.

The Routing is Fabulous, 2 Hops to a major Backbone, 20-40ms Pings MAX to any game server I have been on. I have the 1.5/768 package and I see DL Speeds of 167k Constant, no up and downs, I am seeing UL Speeds of 80-85k Constantly no up and downs.

Like I said it is Pricey at $99.00 per month but it does include 2 static IP's, FileShack Acct, Nationwide Dial Up,Rhapsidy Music Account, 10Mb Shell Account, Web and Email accounts. But the most important things to "ME" is why I pay the higher price $$ I can run my own servers, Mail,Web,FTP,Game, without breaking any TOS and also I have the Upstream to do it. Static IP's, and Awesome routing.

I am 100% Happy with my change from Comcast and would recommend others to check into Speakeasy if you need and can get DSL service.

For all that plus the 768kbps UL, $99/mo doesn't sound "overpriced" to me.

OK so why would comcast even consider having an xbox live logo on there website???????????????????? HUH?????????? Please answer me ??????? www.comcast.net you can see for yourself!!!!!!!!! By the way Microsoft has servers for xbox live. You have to send packets to the server so for this it does require upstream DUh! :P

Count me as another who is looking for a speed increase. Unfortunately nothing else is available to me thats within my price range. Being with ATTBI, I have to wait for the Comcast transition before anything new may be offered. The home network option at 2500/256 is listed as coming soon so hopefully Pro package will be on the way as well. DSL is not an option at this time because my nearest CO is over 13000 feet away. The best offer I got was 384/384 SDSL@$120.

The actual games are hosted on your Xbox though.
