Re: Updated 811493 Patch

I bet because of all the slow down problems on the original patch, MS added a little speed to this new patch to make up for the earlier release! Does this patch even have anything to do with speeding up your pc? Keizer

I just had troubles with Q815021 XP: Security Update.
This particular patch (Q815021) has been mentioned several times here. Just want to clarify: Q815021 is only applicable on XP if one is running IIS? Otherwise I can ignore this patch, right? or should I?

Edit: After the bad experience with original Q811493, I'm happy to report that the updated patch (5/28/03) installed quietly with no side effects. Whew!

oh by the way, I notice that Q815021 patch is made up of one (1) file, ntdll.dll 5.1.2600.1217 (SP2) so I guess it would be ok to install it even if I don't have IIS installed, ya think?

This has been an interesting morning. My plan was to install both updates (811493 and 815021) individually. When I logged in the auto update globe was on the task bar and I decided just to use it to install the updates.

I installed 811493 and then reset the computer. When I logged back in my hard drive was missing. I uninstalled the update and reset my computer again and when it came back up my hard drive was still missing. I found that interesting.

I then decided to shut my computer and left it off for approximately 15-20 minutes. I then restarted my computer and logged back in, and the hard drive was there. I got to thinking that, maybe, I had to shut the computer off in order for the update to work properly on my PC.

I repeated the process, but this time I shut the computer off and let it set for about 15 minutes and then started it back up and logged back in. However, my hard drive was missing again. I uninstalled the patch again, and reset the computer, logged back in and the HD was there.

I then decided to take another approach to the update and went to the Microsoft update page and use that. I installed 811493 and reset the computer and guess what. The HD was there!! I don't know why the auto update was messing me up, but it was. I then installed 815021 without any problem from the update site.

I have noticed that my reboots and log-ons are a little slower since the updates, but other than that no real differences apparent yet.

I installed both of the 811493 and 815021 updates this morning from Windows Update on my Win XP Pro SP1 system.

Been using system all day and as of yet, have had no ill effects as to speed or any applications including NAV 2002.

Q815021 patch is made up of one (1) file, ntdll.dll 5.1.2600.1217 (SP2) - an update related specifically to IIS.

from what I gather, this patch does not apply to Home users unless you have manually added IIS which doesn't install with XP Home in its default setup. So I'll pass on Q815021...

I do knowtice one thing when i installed the patch it seems that the hardrive makes some noise when launching ie an delays about a half a sec - a sec where without the patch it loads instantly from the memory. It seems to do this when i disable the virus scan too which was the same problem with the last patch. However the slowdown is barely knowticeable.

How do I know if I have the old version or the new version of 811493?

Edit: This is what the patch info says in the control panel. Can a user who has updated to the new patch tell me what the info for the new patch says? This will help me determine if I have the new one or not.

Yeah, but those registry keys that they want you to check could be part of the old version too.

I actually did a windows update today. So I checked the windows update history for my computer. The 811493 patch was installed today, so it must be the new version.

Review the filelist and compare it to the information here.

I have Update Q815021 installed, and my system appears to be running as smoothly, and as fast as ever... I also have the new 811493 installed.. Quite a difference from the original 811493!

Just installed this update as well as Q815021 today. No slowdowns to report here.:) Thanks to this forum, I stayed away from the original Q811493 patch because of the slowdowns and warned a friend of mine about this patch too.

Just wanted to add my two cents on Q811493. Had been holding off installing this patch because of the last go around with it, so been watching for problems. After three days, decided to go ahead and install it. I ran XP with this patch for two days and the problems I experienced was a slight speed decrease in page loading and sometimes a real noticeable lag. Also, at times there was an incomplete page loading. I removed the patch and now my speed is back to normal, and the pages are loading normally/completely.

Has anyone noticed any irregularities that I have noticed?

I just got rid of that patch. I noticed that my computer was running a lot slower than usual with the new patch. Microsoft says that the attacker needs to log onto the computer locally in order to carry out an attack. So unless your computer is in some location where many people can access it, then you should be ok.

Well, thanks for all the responses folks. Exactly what I was looking for. Just here to report that the updated version of the patch, while much better than the original, causes a slowdown on my XP machine.

I agree with IncognitoOOL. This exploit does not pose any real risk to my personal machine. So I am living without the new patch for now.
