Ciao

In November 01 I first poked my head into this forum, since then I have posted in here over 2500 times (thats actually a little scary). Between then and now I have had a whole bunch of fun and learned a lot from a whole bunch of people. Some of those people have become my "on line" friends, people who I have on my instant messenger, people I exchange E Mails with weekly and people who I talk to on the telephone here in the cave. During this time I have had some ledgendary discussions, arguments, whatever you want to call it with a number of people. Throughout this this time I have fallen out with people, been told I was going to be chopped up and stuffed in a barrel, made back friends with people and been sent Jerky by an Adelphia Customer. While I do have a slightly combative style when aroused, I enjoy humor, I enjoy writing and try and flavor the forum with what were once described as Hobisms. I have also on a number of occasions been able to use my knowledge and access to open some doors, impart some information and help those members of the group that were having issues. I am not every ones favorite Goblin I realize that but there has always been a line between my off duty activities and my working day. That was until today.
A fairly new member of this site took offence at a sarcastic reply to one of his posts and decided to approach my employer with an official complaint about me. Whether something is offensive or sarcastic is a judgement call. It would be possible for me to argue my case, produce bucket load of personal IM's from customers I have assisted, print of some of my sarcasm and fight a small battle about this. I could try and say that all my posts were made in a small cave on dial up and debate the legality about what I do in my own time. However I really can not be bothered to do that. Those of you that really know me, will be able to vouch that my time could be spent more profitably. So its easier for me to just pick my keyboard and wave goodbye.
It is customary to name people in a post like this. I won't cos I'd forget someone. Those of you I have helped, it was a pleasure. Those I debated with at great length, it was fun and thank you for being able to seperate DSL Reports from real life!!! To those other helpful posters, Thanks..I learned a bunch from you..you know who you are. To the moderators, sorry for the work I caused you on occasions, you do a fine job.

I will still read here although I will be having my hands amputated so I don't reply.

Take care

Hob

Sorry to hear that you are one of the exceptional few who have helped me on many occassions. It will be sad to see you go this forum has always been a place of information for me but also a place to relax and enjoy the humor that comes from your posts. For the individual that complained not only did you run off someone who has been a big help to hundreds of people like myself but you crossed the line of common sense.Just my .02 but why would somebody do that only an immature individual who would rather run from a good debate than take the time to sit down and think through their thoughts. What is the world coming to!Hob you will be missed greatly!!:(

Well, you certainly helped me enough times; either directly or indirectly. Hoping you'll reconsider- but seeing some of the abuse you've been put through, it's understandable. Good luck, either way, thanks one last time- reiko2

Don't forget "And you acted like a 5-year-old anonymous troll who, when someone ruffled your feathers, ran crying to mommy."

Did I mention that I'm very upset about all this?

Hob,

What can I say, man? I joined in late December, 2002 so I could find out what was going on with New Castle. Little did I know that by then the issue had been discussed here ad nauseum already, and soon enough I was on the receiving end of what I have affectionately termed "Hobbian Preludes."

You made me think long and hard about what I say and how I debate, and to that end I thank you for helping me sharpen those skills. I will put that alongside the technical help you've provided me between then and now.

Take care, my friend. There's a forum waiting for you should ever decide to have your fingers surgically re-attached.

"To the a$$hat that complained: GG, you just took away one of the most helpful persons on this forum; please go crawl under a rock and d.."

This is why I won't be posting anymore as well. as far as I am now concerned, there is an 888# thats designated for technical assistence.

People come here and try and help others. many have stated they received better help here then they did on that 888# on several occasions.

If someone wishes to go the distance and start contacting employers whom already do NOT recognize this site as an 'official' support channel, to make their complaints because they don't admire someones sence of humor???

What happened with Hobs institutes what I would call a move of solidarity on my part. If this is whats going to happen, its not really worth it.

I personally know of several individuals who don't condone this site.

As I have stated in the past, we ALL have freedom of speech. I would encourage everyone to exercise this given right at all times. While you do this, remember that your actions could result in reprocussions for others.

In this case, the reprocussions of Hob on the job are irrelivent. The true reprocussions will be the loss of support on here and a lot of folks calling that 888# and waiting on hold and being given the company line instead of the skinny as its been presented on here on several occasions.

I think a lot of little birdies just flew the coup.

To the individual that sent the letter.. I actually THANK YOU. There have been many individuals I've had the operatunity to help through the means provided here at DSLR and I'll always keep those thoughts on my mind as I speak with individuals while on the phone. You have shown to me what going 'above and beyond' can mean to some.. and deny to others. I will cherish the feeling knowing I have been able to assist others off the phone on a voulentary statute and of good will towards my fellow user.

Sincerely,
D.B.

P.S. : Best wishes Hob, I'll be bringing the beer!

Hobs, Jax, and all other BBR posters from the Firm. What can I tell ya? I could have seen this coming from a mile away. I speak from experience. Folks like you lead a dedicated quest to try and help out others in your spare time. Management turns a blind eye to these activities but doesn't condone it because it presents a loss of control that may compromise their carefully orchestrated customer service framework. Eventually, something happens and then all participants are told to cease and desist or get they will get the big stick. Or eventually the participants just bail out because they realize it just isn't worth it for all of the BS they have to put up with at work only to put up with more in a forum like this.

It's sad that these things happen. I speak from experience for I have walked in your shoes before. Go well. And thanks for the many hours you put in trying to just help out with RTFM level stuff or shedding a little bit of light on what was going on on the other side of the fence.

I'll be sorry to see you go. I know we've had a few heated discussions, but when the day was over I still considered you my "online friend". You and the other techs that have provided help on their own time will be sorely missed in this little corner of the internet.

Sorry to see you go Hobs. While I did not always agree with you, sometimes you made me laugh others not. Your knowledge will be missed. It is inexcusable that someone would report a person to their employer for off time activities. Without the help of Adelphia techs in this forum, many problems will go unsolved.

Good Luck Hobs

Jim

Well, we've had our disagreements, but I hate to see you go. Especially like this. I can understand your position more than others. While my advice is to "say what you mean and damn those that don't like it", it isn't worth your job and career.

What this person is doing to you is completely unacceptable in any setting. I don't have the time to go on further this morning, I wish I did. You're making the only decision that makes sense, no matter how much you and we hate it. You will be missed Hob.

I might as well add my 2 cents. Being a neophyte, and certainly not a power user, I have certainly benefited from the advice and help that has been offered here over time. I for one , dont understand why anyone would behave in a manner which causes grief to others who's only agenda is to help those who come to this forum. I suspect that the bottom line is that person's cheese has fallen off the cracker.I will miss Hob and Jax , the others as well who give of themselves. I wish you all the best --- you will certainly be missed. Cheers !!

Sad that your employer does not realize you are human, make mistakes, and are not liked by everyone on the planet. I bet if you plotted satisfaction with Hob on a graph, this fool who complained would be considered error in the data, and thrown out.

My VP said to me in a one one conversation that he expects all his people to fail at something every year. He says if you aren't failing on occasion then you aren't trying hard enough.

Guess your employer just handcuffed a "Real Employee".

Good Luck Hob.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me when I attempted to help subscribers on a local level at Cox Communications. Needless to say I stopped posting there and came here since I was in the Adelphia coverage area.

If it was not for the folks on this forum I never would have known about the "cloud" or a heads up as to when my area would be fixed. A little birdie on this forum gave me a date and I was taken off the ATM on that date. Now THAT is customer service!

I will miss the accurate information that was provided by the folks who are leaving.
