OT: Jury Duty

Hey All,
I got a jury summons for July 1, 2003, today. UGH UGH I don't want to do it. I've already gotten out of it back in 2000 once so I can't get out of it again. Need some ideas on how to get out of jury duty during the interview process FAST. And where I won't get called again. Please no posts about this being civic duty.. I pay enough in local taxes.

If you have your employer write a letter saying it would be a detriment to his/her business or it would be a financial hardship on you, that sometimes gets you excused from serving.

if it's for a murder case just tell them you don't think any murderers should be able to get parole. that has gotten me out before and it wasn't even a lie.

I believe in the death penalty so that is not a problem. (no comments please.)

It's really tough to get out of it in New Jersey. Last time I went I was sitting next to two police officers who were called as well. The easiest way is to come up with a legitimate hardship excuse if called to sit on a jury.

Good Luck Kristi

Here in my county if you are a police officer or firefighter or involved in medicine, i.e. doctor, you can get out of jury duty easily.

Yeah, up until recently the same was true here.

if you know the officers that were called to the incident, then you can get out of it that way too.

What a coincidence, I report for jury duty on June 9th to last till July 11th. This is my second time in fifteen years, it was fun the first time, but I'm not excited this time. The Grand Jury would have been nice, however it's Circuit Court twice. The prosecution/States Attorney loves Public safety/Law enforcement officers on juries. Feels like a trip to the Dentist somehow, don't want to go.

During your interview when you are asked things like; have you ever had anything stolen, say yes. No defense attorney would you in the jury pool. If things like race or religion come up work it in like you are a racist and hate everyone. The point is to make you undesirable as a juror. Good luck.

I've been on call for jury duty numerous times and have yet to get called for a trial which actually occurred. Jury duty is something I've always wanted to do and I'm the only one who never seems to get the chance.

Sorry Kristi, I just can't feel too sorry for you.

Well Kristi, If I had a dollar for each time I've been summoned, Project Hope would be fully funded. Out of all those times, I've only served once and that made all the difference for me.

Up until then, it seemed like a total waste and every time I got a summons, I read over the list reasons to be excluded from showing up.

If good people don't serve, the not so good will.

Sorry Kristi, I know you didn't want to hear the civic speech.

I just served my tour for this year! I was only there for 1 day as I was put in a jury pool for a civil case that settled the day before trial (imagine that!!!). This is the fourth time in 11 years that I have been summoned. If you really want to get out of it, tell the judge that you are hearing impaired. Say "HUH?" or "Will you repeat that please?" every time someone says something to you and I guarantee that you will be excused.

Hi Jeff,
My next-to-the-oldest brother will say the same thing. He has served on a jury or two and he is all for anyone serving on one. It is just a hassle all around. For those of us who work for a living, this is just a hassle. For six dollars a day and a pentance for travel, it is not worth it to me over lost time at work. I would rather be working. (Yes, I work downtown and the courthouse is a few blocks from my work so that is not the problem.). As I see it, the court system is full of nonsense cases.. Sorry I don't really want to waste my time hearing some case about some food joint making one overweight; for example. I have NO desire to sit on a jury for a murder trial.

Here we have to send the summons back or call by a certain date. Both times I have been asked to serve, I waited until the last minute to call. Both times, I was told they had the necessary number of jurors. Coincidence? Maybe, but worth a shot if you have that option.

I got it on June 4th! I know they won't touch me though...after no no fault accidents and one that caused me to have surgery they must know that I have a preconceived idea of how I am going to rule!

I know in Massachusetts, the best thing to do is reschedule to a Friday, or preferably the day before a long weekend/holiday. There is an 800 number to call and 9 times out of 10, jurors will not have to report.

Why not?

I have to call the night before.. But, still, it is a pain because I have to let my manager know that I may have jury duty.

How bad do you want to get out of it? Walk into the courtroom barefoot in a tank top & shorts, wearing a hat, & be sure to have a great big wad of gum in your mouth. Have your cell phone or pager go off and then go off again after you've been told to turn it off. I guarantee it'll get you out of jury duty because you'll be in jail for contempt of court.
