Kazaa on Linux

Click for full size
For those of you who like to use Kazaa, there is a FastTrack Plugin ( »www.loonix.de/html/downl ··· 05&kat=1 ) available for giFT ( »gift.sf.net ) that connects you to the kazaa network.

To get both working you must use cvs to get the code. For giFT the instructions are at: »gift.sourceforge.net/docs.php and for giFT-FastTrack use this to checkout from cvs:
code:
 cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.gift-fasttrack.berlios.de:/cvsroot/gift-fasttrack co giFT-FastTrack

and read the README file for instructions on how to compile it.

This is still in development so the preformance will vary and I am not familiar with Kazaa as this is the first time I've connected to their network.

WOW this is SO bad-ass, using it right now with giFTCurs because giFToxic is being a bitch about gtk.

This is nice, thanks.

I whipped through the set up, so have to go back and actually read now. Was excited just to see if it worked

EDIT: any tips/settings on keeping secure?? I really never used anything like this. Just want to make sure i am not sharing my whole drive out. Set the share drive to /home/me/shares. And to just "user". Anything to make sure of?

thanks

AFAIK, the FastTrack implementation doesn't include upload ability, so you wouldn't have to worry about sharing your HD.

not really, the gift-setup utility has pretty good defaults. Just don't open up the ports for it on your firewall (unless you feel its okay, which i think it is)and you should be fine.

I really have nothing to compare it to, since I've never used Kazaa on Windows. It seems to work fine, some downloads fail, as in they never start, but it seems to return a decent amount of search results. Maybe someone who has more experience with kazaa can chime in about how it compares.

Hopefully one of these days giFT will actually make some binary releases and people will start using it instead of kazaa.

It works good. However I cant seem to get most of the 3rd party front ends to work. Keeps failing looking for a library that is supplied by giFT even though I have it in my $PATH.

I would like to blame it on the theory that the CVS trunk of giFT is too new and the library the GUI is looking for is of a different version. However I cant get off the hook that easy because Freerock posted a pic of it working for him

Its good, but the problem i see is it doesnt look for more sources on its own. Also, instead of manually selecting to choose more once you realize its not going anywhere, i have had better luck with pausing, then restarting...then it looks again. It definitely needs something like speed up to search for more each couple minutes, but for some reason i don't think find more sources is working yet either.

It definetely compiled, had to set something when building giFToxic. But the error it gave told me what to do.

Can someone give me in-depth information on how to setup giFT itself? I can't install this if I don't have giFT installed =).

Edit: It needs CVS, but I don't have CVS.
How can I install CVS?

I've only used the GTK2 clients. The latest giFToxic release should work fine and if you want to use giFTui, you should get that from cvs.

and if giFToxic doesn't work, try out giFTcurs, its a great terminal based UI.

I have a problem while trying to setup giFT.
I did everything from getting the source from CVS to giFT-setup. When I try to run giFT, I get the following message:
code:

[r00t@linux giFT]$ giFT

*** ERROR: Your setup is incomplete ***

You will need to run giFT-setup and be sure that you read absolutely
every configuration option (no, really). If you are unable to complete
giFT-setup, you may optionally copy the contents of the etc/ directory
with the distribution to /home/r00t/.giFT/.

So I re-did everything, including running giFT-setup 5+ times, and I still get the same message.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

run giFT-setup as a normal user. then run giFT -d as a normal user. There is no reason to run giFT as root.

I don't think he's actually running it as root, his username is "r00t".

Did you catch the first question under giFT-setup. It is a trick and took me a time or two to catch. Set your answer to a non-zero.

Oh my god, thank you!
Now how do I install the FastTrack plugin?
OpenFT has too less users/files, so maybe FastTrack might help.

Well, I get an error while trying to ./configure.
Here's what it says:
code:

checking whether byte ordering is bigendian... no
checking for short... yes
checking size of short... configure: error: cannot compute sizeof (short), 77
See `config.log' for more details.
[r00t@linux giFT-FastTrack]$

This is only the last parts of the ./configure

I am on Red Hat Linux 9 (kernel 2.4.20-8).

Edit: Now it asks for libgift. Shouldn't this have been installed with giFT? How come it's not there?
code:
checking whether -lc should be explicitly linked in... no
creating libtool
./configure: line 7946: syntax error near unexpected token `FT,'
./configure: line 7946: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FT, libgift >= 0.10.0)'
[r00t@linux giFT-FastTrack]$
