| Painful Norton LiveUpdate 3June03 I got the two LU items in Attachment #1 this afternoon--the virus defs mentioned in today's sticky, and the NIS program update. I d/l'd, installed, and rebooted. That's when things went bad. The desktop came up and hung--no XP intro music and my system tray was missing the Norton icons as well as my Intel Active Monitor icon. Clicked on task manager and it wouldn't come up. Clicked on my desktop icon for NIS and after a long wait, I got my intro music and Norton. So I tried LU again and got the Redirector update that you see in attachment #2. Mind you, I had already installed it when it first came out a few days ago. I installed the update and rebooted. Same problem, but now Norton says there are no more new updates. I don't know what to do at this point, but I'm leaning towards a Sytem Restore. What do you think about this LiveUpdate from Hell?

| Fat City: It is most likely caused by v6.0.4 LU. Only a few people had problems with v6.0.4 in the past before it was pulled. NIS team was unable to find a pattern on why a few people have problems from this version. It was rereleased again.
Questions for you and others (who have this problem from this LU):
Questions: 1. Is your installation Norton Internet Security, Norton Internet Security Professiona, or Norton Personal Firewall? 2. Is NAV from NIS or another Symantec product? 3. You said Windows XP Home or Pro. Which service pack? All hot fixes too? 4. What other Symantec products are installed? 5. You can provide me with all your system configuration from »www.belarc.com and e-mail me (I sent you an IM with my e-mail address). 6. Does the problem occur if your programs try to connect to the internet, or at system startup only? 7. What type of internet connection do you have? 8. Does the problem occur if you disable NAV Autoprotect? 9. What type of hardware do you have? Belarc will give some ideas, but your provided manual details would be nice. 10. Is the problem consistent? 11. Can you see if you can get screen shots of the hang/pause if possible? 12. Clean boot with only Symantec products. Still hang/pause? 13. Do you have a fancy configuration setup in NPF/NIS/NISP rules? 14. Permit all network traffic (remember to enable them the firewall rules after the test) and see if you still have the problem.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. I will be checking this thread from home tonight (leaving for home in a few minutes). [text was edited by author 2003-06-03 23:28:35] |

NPF is down and won't let me change any options (see attachments).
OK, Antdude, here's some info. Do you work for Norton by any chance? 1)NPF 2003 2)NAV 2003 from NSW Pro 2003 3)XP Pro/SP1; not all hotfixes 6)Startup only 7)Comcast Cable 8)Haven't tried 9)Intel P4 1.4 ghz, Intel D850G mobo w/latest BIOS, Nvidia graphic card, ESS sound card, 30gig WD HD, Mitsumi burner, NEC DVD player 10)So far; or until I get rid of my Norton products! 11)What's to see? Normal desktop missing systray icons for NAV, NPF, and Active Monitor. 12)Haven't tried 13)Default settings 14)Haven't tried
I'm still leaning towards System Restore hopefully followed by success; if no joy, uninstall all Symantec products and re-install only NAV 2002 from a NIS 2002 CD.
I am very tired of being a guinea pig for Symantec. I have spent more time installing, uninstalling, and reinstalling Norton products than any other software, including Operating Systems. |

Is he/she also using NIS v6.0.4? If so, then did he/she have the same problem before the patch? Details on the computer setup would be helpful.

I doubt System Restore would fix the v6.0.4 problem.
I will record your computer setup and pass on to others. Any other information would be helpful if you can provide them. -- -- Ant @ The Ant Farm: »antfarm.ma.cx |

I'm not sure, I remember that it started just after we installed the program but before that I had NAV installed and had just run liveupdate. It's a new toshiba laptop |

I had the same problem initially, Then I ran LiveUp again and it found another update, Redirector, I got that and restarted Windows and all has been well since! That was just a few hours ago. -- Only thing Protecting your Right to Keep & Bear arms is Your NRA! Are you a member?»www.nra.org |

 | Problem Fixed. Uninstalled NPF 2003 and it ain't coming back.
System fine now, even with NAV/NSW 2003. But if they misbehave, they'll be gone too.

Re: Painful Norton LiveUpdate 3June03 I don't have a solution to the problem but I want to let everyone know that Live Update just caused me problems too. I ran Live Update tonight and my system nearly stopped running too. I installed the virus definitions and system redirector. I rebooted as instructed and when Windows loaded I was presented with an error (something about two files not matching maybe?). I took a screenshot but I was eventually forced to run GoBack to get my system running again so I don't have the screenshot anymore. If anyone knows why this update is going bad for so many people I'd like to know. -- Fight Cancer - Track Money |

An easy solution is reinstalling, Uninstall/install takes minutes, And if you have Broadband, Updates take minutes. Just a thought and probably what they would recommend anyway.

Gary44 join:2000-03-18 Yorktown Heights, NY | Sorry for the "me too" but I ran Live Update this evening and have had nothing but problems since. After a reboot, the system sits idle - no "tada" music - for a few minutes. Suddenly it springs back to life and NIS loads. I'm running XP Home and NIS 6.0.4.34. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and the system started normally during the first reboot. As soon as I ran Live Update and rebooted again, the problem returned.
Anyone know if Symantec is working on a fix? |

Yes, we are still investigating this well-known problem. The problem is we can't reproduce this issue in house. We need to find a computer or a way to reproduce this problem. Like I said earlier, not everyone has this problem. All we know is that it happens only with Windows XP and v6.0.4 LU (v6.0.2.25 and earlier versions were fine). The v6.0.4 problem occurs even with NPF 2003 and a fresh installation of XP (nothing else installed on it!).
Does anyone live near Santa Monica, CA, that has this v6.0.4 LU problem? Others and I are currently working a few people who knows computers well and do not live in ths state. We have been trying different ideas to debug this issue, and no luck.
For those, who have problems with v6.0.4 LU -- uninstall (wait until XP is stable even if it takes ten minutes to stop hanging; use RNIS and/or RNAV if you can't use regular uninstall) and reinstall NIS/NPF/NISP. Then update it without v6.0.4 for now.
I will keep you guys posted. [text was edited by author 2003-06-06 01:07:18] |
