| reply to babacher Re: [Project Hope] What parts do you need?
said by babacher : I'll see what they have in the way of HDs around 2 GB or so.
Bruce I have a 2 gig just lying around the house I can send to you if you need it. I also know that we have enough members that have old HDD's that said they would donate them if it was needed.
I think this was a great post to give us an idea where our hosts currently are. It looks that besides the blades we will have to budget some money for other things (UPS, 15" monitors, etc....).
And with part donations we might be able to get the other things mentioned that the hosts will need.

| reply to Slava Somebody define short cat 5 cables and long cat 5 cables. I have a spool of cat 5 and plenty of ends.
As to monitors, a local company that I do some work for deals in off lease product. I think 15" monitors go for about $45, but I will have to check. Most are name brand ( IBM, Dell, Mitsubishi, blah, blah).
4 Port KVM's are kinda expensive by the time you buy all the cables. Maybe an off lease monitor would be a better solution for diagnostics. -- time nor tide wait for no man... TEN - Team Endeavor | BOUNCE |RC5 |

Wow an entire spool, sweet I know who we go to if we need to get some cat 5 cables.
Next thing you mentioned Pinhead was about monitors. Peter (a.k.a ColdinCbus) mentioned that he had 3/4 old 15" monitors. I realize there not very expensive, but I'm also sure we would pay more in shipping then if tried to buy it from somewhere. (This is just me making a hypothesis, since I actually didn't go to the post office and find out the rates on shipping it). But the price you mentioned of $45 is a very good one and it seems very reasonable. Does that price also include S@H?
The last thing you mentioned was a 4 port KVM. I'm not sure what a KVM is, but in my explanation it might show that I just might have one ...lol I have a switching device that with a push of a button I am able to use 1 monitor, 1 mouse and 1 keyboard with up too 4 different pc's. The name of mine is Belkin. It might be what you mean; I am just not familiar with the term KVM And you are correct about pricey, for the 4 port switch it was $100 and each pc's cables was another $30. So the price on that can add up very quickly and it might be cheaper for us to use an off lease monitor.
Personally I am not that technically knowledgeable in this matter so for me it's easier to use the switch. I also was wondering how you it's done to use 1 monitor and multiple blades to monitor it. (I guess since Im not the host I will not have to worry about it, but I'm still curious ) I always wondered (how in this picture they had 1 monitor and it keeps a track of the 11 blades). How was it set up to do this? And will we need to buy anything extra to set it up to do this? (That was the chairman in me asking the last question) lol

You use some type of remote terminal service to do this. All of the blades are on the same network. With Linux, you can just telnet in or xterm or use LTSP. With Windows XP, you would use Remote Desktop...(RAS for NT I think) I use remote desktop all the time and it's great. You're actually viewing the desktop of the remote computer... There's also some freeware out there that does it, but for the life of me I can't find the link! -- What else would you do? |
