OT: Why can't I have this speed at home?

My project over the past few months has been optimizing our company's internet connectivity. Until Monday we had approximately 30,000 users going through four proxies on old Catalyst 5000 series switches with ancient RSMs.

We since moved the campus over to GigE on 6509s with screaming fast MSFCs and the server group added a few more proxies, and this is the result:

2003-06-05 11:21:50 EST: 16622 / 12345
Your download speed : 16622056 bps, or 16622 kbps.
A 2029 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 12345679 bps, or 12345 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Ahhh. Much better

. If only I could get that at home.

The problem that I have with OOL right now is that I don't top out over 5500kb/s due to my Linksys BEFSR41 router which I've had forever. The Motorola Surfboard 4x00 series and supposively, the new 5100 do not like it's 10MB WAN port. Looks like it might be time to spend a few bucks on a new one. Otherwise, I'll top out at 700-800kb on almost all my downloads of ISO's. Most of the time when I need to pull the ISO's and want that extra speed, I direct connect from the modem to one of my networked PC's close to it for an hour or so and grab what I need.

I'd try going for a SMC. Linksys routers are, well. If you can't say anything nice. Their implementation of various standards and options is a joke. Their backplane is a bit pathetic as well. I've got the SMC router, which has a 100mbit wan port. Regularly 9000+ kbps down and 1100 kbps up.

A friend just dumped his Linksys, which he averaged around 5k before and now gets over 9k.

One point you might want to consider: Most sites can't dish out more than 5000 kbps, so mostly, he notices no difference. Once in a while, though...

I was looking into getting the NR041 Network Anywhere by Linksys, which is highly recommended in the OOL forum, or the Linksys BEFSX41, which is also recommended. How is the port forwarding on the SMC and which model is it? I need port forwarding for both SETI(so I can use my personal cache from work) and remote access.

I have an older smc, the 7004ABR, and am able to forward up to 20 ports. My home queue is visible from work, I also, when needed, have a development web server, ftp server, etc. set up.

I use Dameware remote to get into one of my machines remotely, from which I can control just about any other machine on my network.

I know the newer SMC supports all of this too.

While I have no experience with the router you're talking about, the Linksys products I've owned have been very good. I just like SMC a bit better

(802.11a WAP and NIC, 7004ABR router, and a bunch of switches and NICs).

Either way, you should get what you need.

I was about $50 short on getting a Nokia router from my old company. Great pieces of equipment. Thing wouldn't budge, especially with the things we were running through it.

Oh well. Time to start researching routers. Cisco is a little out of my price range.
