Very bad NAV issue

Just installed NAV 2003 and NPF 2003 and did all the updates. Now they won't load. A couple of the associated processes are running the background but most are not, and NAV and NPF system tray icons have vanished.

System is also hanging.

What is going on?

Sound is also screwed up. Instead of getting the normal XP sounds, I'm getting an internal beep.

Re: Very bad NAV issue

I wouldn't reformat. I would just uninstall all the NAV stuff completely, and if you want, try it again or install Mcafee or any other program you wish.

In all honesty, this sounds very much like the problem discussed at »Painful Norton LiveUpdate 3June03 . Might want to take a look through that thread now.

Do you have a recent (prior to the install) restore point?

*sigh* Looks like uninstall/reinstall time.

I hate you Symantec.

Okay, here's the deal:

•Uninstalled NPF 2003. This is a NPF 2003 issue, not a NAV 2003 issue.
•Rebooted, system came back up normally. System sounds are restored.
•Reinstalled NPF 2003 without the v6.0.4 update.
•Things are working OK now.

Here's my question: Without the redirector or whatever it's called v6.0.4, will I be able to get the latest updates still? What is a redirector anyways?

As jvmorris noted, it is most likely the v6.0.4 LU for NPF 2003.

So why doesn't Symantec just remove it from LU? Even if it's not a really widespread issue... they should remove it anyways. They're causing enough problems as it is.

On a side note, if I leave auto update enabled in NAV and NPF... will it download the 6.0.4 update on it's own?

1. Actually it was pulled back in April 2003, but Symantec was unable to reproduce it inhouse (see the other thread for details). I am not sure why it wasn't repulled again with this rerelease (I would!).

2. As for AutoLiveUpdate, just disable NIS program updates only. You should be fine. If you want to, downgrade nisum.exe file (make a backup of the newer file) if you want to use v6.0.4 for now as noted in the other thread.

The status is the problem is being analyzed. I hope to find out more details tomorrow.

antdude,

I sincerely wish you the best luck with tomorrow. I really hope that someone at the higher level of Symantec realizes that this is hardly a trivial issue with their customer base and that the entire future of their product lines may well rest on how well and constructively they respond to this issue.

At the current time, Symantec isn't getting any favorable press from its users (buyers, if you will) on any of the forums or newsgroups that I frequent.

The only 'short' weeks that I can recall seemed to invariably involve a deadline -- on which I was already behind schedule!
