Norton 6.04 patch Resolution

Solution:
On computers that run Windows XP, this problem is caused by an updated version of the Nisum.exe file, version 6.0.2.2003. To solve the problem, first verify that you have the 6.04 update, and then replace the Nisum.exe file with the attached file, version 6.0.2.1015.

To verify and replace the file:

1. Find your current copy of Nisum.exe:
a. Click Start, and then click Search.
b. Click "All files and folders."
c. In the "All or part of the file name" box, type--or copy and paste--the following file name:

nisum.exe

d. Verify that "Look in" is set to "Local Hard Drives" or to (C).
e. Click "More advanced options."
f. Select "Search subfolders."
g. Click Search. The file Nisum.exe appears on the right pane of the Search window.
h. Note what folder this file is in.
2. Verify the file version:
a. Right-click the file name Nisum.exe and click Properties.
b. Click the Version tab.
c. Verify that the "File version:" is 6.0.2.2003.
If the screen shows 6.0.2.2003, continue with step 3.
If the screen does not show 6.0.2.2003, stop here. You do not have the newer version of this file. If you encounter a problem with the NIS password that you did not have before installing the 6.04 update, read the following document: NIS or NPF unexpectedly prompts for a supervisor password. Otherwise, search the NIS Knowledge Base for further information.
3. Obtain Nisum.exe:
a. Create a new folder on your hard drive.
b. Save the attached file, Nisum.zip version 6.0.2.1015, to the new folder.

c. Open Windows Explorer to the new folder.
d. Double-click Nisum.zip. This step places Nisum.exe version 6.0.2.1015 in the same new folder.
4. Rename the newer copy of Nisum.exe:
a. Close NIS and all Symantec programs.
b. Open Windows Explorer to the folder that you noted in step 1h. This folder has the newer copy of Nisum.exe.
c. Rename this copy of Nisum.exe to Nisum.bak
5. Copy Nisum.exe from the new folder that you created in step 3 to the folder that you noted in step 1h.
6. Restart the computer.

Bobb/moderators, can you please kindly change the Norton title to Norton Internet Security (or use NIS/NPF/NIS Pro for shorter title). Also, it's v6.0.4, not v6.04. Basically, the title should read like "Norton Internet Security 2004 v6.0.4 Patch Resolution". Norton is too generic since there's SystemWorks, Ghost, Utilities, AntiVirus, etc.

If you can't rename...

...then do it in Windows XP's safe mode. I believe one tester had this problem because file was in used.

Hopefully, there will be a LiveUpdate fix to fix this NISUM.EXE problem.

Follow-up on NISUM.EXE file...

NIS team and other testers are currently testing a newer version of this file right now to be sure it works with NIS 2003 products v6.0.4 LiveUpdate in Windows XP.

If you wish to help by testing it with the same steps (overwrite NISUM.EXE file), then please IM me via DSLR/BRR (with your valid e-mail address) and I will send you an updated NISUM.EXE file via e-mail. Please note that this is a volunteer request and note that there is a risk with this prerelease file (it could break your NIS 2003 installation).

Thank you in advance.

So there's a fixed version of 6.0.4 in the works?

Yes, but no release date. v6.0.4 LU was pulled as of Friday, 6/13/2003.
