| reply to OZZYHEAD Do you mean compressed or compacted? The old way was to go out to DOS and export and then re-import your registry again. That would compress it for you and get rid of all the free space making your registry smaller and, as a result, faster. I don't know how to go about that in XP though. |

| reply to OZZYHEAD I use RegCompact. It's not free, but does an excellent job.

| reply to jdong I think of it like changing the oil on your car. If you don't do it you will notice it and if you do do it you don't notice any difference. Of course there is the psychological feeling you get when you change the oil in your car. You could swear that the car is running better |

It's not like changing the oil in a car. Changing the oil is a MANDATORY procedure, and could lead to ENGINE DAMAGE if it isn't changed. Defragging the registry isn't MANDATORY. I've yet to hear about any damage from not changing it.
P.S. I agree, Sentinel , about the psychological effect. -- Any mistatements, errors, or other problems in this post were caused by your ISP's interference, and I am in no way responsible... |

| Sorry my analogy was not specific enough for you. It's also not like an oil change because you don't end up with oil on your hands either.
My point is that it is similar to an oil change in that if you do it right you don't notice anything. It's only when you don't do it that you notice.
Allowing your registry to grow and grow could eventually cause a slight loss in performance. For the average person no big deal. For optimum performance buffs... every little tweak helps. |

Next to nothing.
I tried it. All it did was reduce my pagefile.sys fragments from 9 to 4.
I guess it didn't hurt to do that. I am not sure if it will speed up my system. But, I guess it didn't hurt it either..
