Proxomitron

Has anyone ever used a little program called Proxomitron
It can be found here.

»asp.flaaten.dk/pforum/default.asp

And here.

»accs-net.com/smallfish/prox.htm

I have not tried it with my Satellite Yet! Just curious if anyone knows about this great little program and has tried it?

The problem with this and other programs like it is that it runs at the local host [127.0.0.1] (At least it did the only time I looked at it) which is where the DirecWay proxy server runs. You can't do both.

seagreen, I beg to differ. I am running AdSubtract Pro with DRS and the proxy. It also uses the local host. I haven't had any problems so far. I'm not sure how, but its does filter correctly. I was using AOL+ Sat, and it worked fine through IE and the Sat, but not AOL. It just might be worth a try.

They use different ports. AdSubtract uses a port in the 4xxx range, so it doesn't interfere with the proxy at port 83 or 85 and they can be piggybacked. WinRoute Pro's proxy server runs at port 3128, and can be directed to use the HPEP proxy at port 83 as a "parent proxy"... different ports, same machine, same loopback address. No problem.

As for the 127.0.0.1, that's the loopback address, so all processes running on a machine that are accessed from that local machine are properly addressed at 127.0.0.1, but each must have its own port. I don't think you generally access AdSubtract from a different machine, but if you did you'd use the real IP address of the machine it was running on (like 192.168.0.1 if running it on your DW host) and the port 4xxx.... again, no interference with the HPEP proxy.

I've been using Proxomitron long before I ever used a satellite system and I've used the Proxomitron with both starband (years ago) and now with Direcway...
I've never had any problem using it ... It makes it very easy to switch from proxy on to proxy off from the sys tray..
I don't use the Direcway proxy, I mainly use the Proxomitron to mask my ip address and to kill popups and nasty java scripts...
Some people find using all its functions a bit intimidating but the instructions to set it up for proxy use are very easy to follow...
Give it a try .. you really have nothing to lose, it is self-contained in a folder and doesn't integrate itself into the registry or anything else..

Thank you guys for providing some real-world feedback.
Just for clarification, was I was mistaken in my assumption that Proxomitron would interfere with the use of the DirecWay proxy? ....or are those of you who are using it just forgoing the use of the DirecWay proxy?

No reason it should interfere, so long as it's not using ports 83, 84, 85, or 86. I think by default it's at one of the more typical proxy ports like 80 or 8080... Accs-net has a page of information regarding chaining Proxomitron and other proxy servers, but they don't reference DirecWay (naturally).

I'm not sure I see a reason for using it, but I've been know to chain WinRoute Pro's proxy (at 3128) to the HPEP proxy at port 83 or 85 so that two of my client computers (the ones that spend most of their time at cartoonnetwork.com, etc) could benefit from the cache...

It doesn't interfere with the direcway proxy, all you are really doing is just loading the proxy into the proxomitron rather than into your browser.
I actually load a list of proxies into the Proxomitron (including the Direway proxy), I am able to right-click my Proxomitron icon and switch proxies at will...
I have my browsers HTTP pointed to localhost:8080. That tells your browser to funnel its http requests through the proxomitron. Then inside of proxomitron you just load the proxies that you want to use (or none at all) and it will then use to proxy you select to surf the web...
Its actually quite handy ... I also use it for https but that requires some extra ssl files..
Hope that helps...

I too have been using Proxomitron for many years now, using it with DW is superior to accessing proxys thru the browser. One of the things I like most other then being able to change proxys really fast, is all the other things Proxomitron gives you the power to utilize. You can control cookies, java, scripts, URL's, banner blocking, popup blocking, killing an enormous amount of unwanted things per site, the list of things you have control over are endless. Then on top of all that you have header filters, and all of the control of them, incoming as well as outgoing. And MUCH more! The possibilities are endless.

OK, that's cool. Is there any particular trick to make it work with your Direcway proxy?

There's trouble in Proxomitron land. Read this thread in the Security forum:

Not really, once you have Proxomitron loaded, set your browser http settings to localhost or 127.0.0.1 port 8080, assuming you haven't changed the default port of Proxomitron. Then IN Proxomitron, check the "use remote proxy" box and put in 127.0.0.1:83 or 127.0.0.1:85 and give it a whirl.

As for the web page filters and header filters, you may want to edit the existing options or turn them off all togeather, or even create and add your own, depends on the individuals needs, but I believe you'll find with them enabled you have control over nearly everything.
