| Help a Newbie !!!
I finally got around to joining the folding at home group yesterday, but had fun with the download.
1st - - P3-450, WIM98se, cable, ZoneAlarm
After installing the FAH screen saver I received one of Bill Gates special events. The window that tells one that the computer has done a illegal and if you click the details it will give several lines of (to me) jibberage. clicked on it and received the BSOD and it locked up so bad that I had to hit the kill switch to get control again.
But on restart I did get the FAH screen saver working, and overnite it has changed the picture. BUT, I still would like to confirm that it is working properly. I checked the links at the top of the FAH page and although there is likely a program listed there that would tell me if this thing is working I'm too ignorant to recognize it. Also I have followed the link to folding@home twice and this thing locked up both times trying to see if my name was listed.
Anything you can teach me will be much loved !!! |

| reply to rfhar Welcome rfhar! I wish I could help you, but I've never tried to run the screensaver, and I have no idea how it works. I do know that almost everyone who has tried to use it has had problems with it. The command line version doesn't have the pretty graphics, but it is very stable and easy to install, and you can get lots of help if you have any questions. It also is much more productive, because it runs continually in the background, and not just when your computer is idle. In any event, I'm very happy that you decided to join our team! -- 3 cams, 5 cats, 7 days a week. |

| I will switch over if I have to but chose the screen saver because I am getting to the point where I need to add 256k of RAM, am getting that 90% warning periodicly. I can't seem to get to the website to see if my name is listed and for how much. I was hoping that there was another way to do it. [text was edited by author 2001-04-13 13:07:24] |

You do not have to switch at all!!! However, with the screen saver it will take longer to run, as it only processes the work unit when the SS is active, and in the past it has been very problematic!!!:)
Until you have completed one work unit and return it to Stanford, you will not show-up in the stats.
This is the link to the Stanford stats search page.. CLICK HERE !!! -- ~gizmo |

| Thanks gizmowizard. I was following a link from the FAQ and don't know what it was downloading but I've loaded 10 Meg pictures faster and not had to restart to get control of my computer. The link is on my desktop and also a program called proteinpeeker also. I've only had about 20 hours of run time so I 'll wait till tomorrow and watch the band on the bottom and if nothing seems to move I'll delete my download file and get another and remove and install again. |
