Hayes Island Technique

Click for full size

After seeing some of the beautiful modifications to photos that some of this forum's members have been making, I thought I'd try my hand at something a little different than my usual nature photography. This painterly effect was rendered in what is sometimes called the "Hayes Island Technique."

What do you think?

Really neat looking. I recall the actual image but to have done with this with it is really creative, even though I haven't the foggiest idea of how it's done. The picture itself looks as if it were done on paper with watercolors. The matting and framing is adds a great dimension to the whole thing. For what it's worth, I like it.

I would be able to write up a tutorial if you would like. I have used this technique before and it is pretty straightforward.

I think that an excellent idea. Maybe you could create it as an action?

If you haven't already been to Paul's (Lucid V's) site, click on the link in his sig and view his excellent work.

Nice effect. I like the texture you got on yours.

I also used this technique on my "painting" in the gallery. Here is a link to the tutorial I used for mine:

I would like to see another tutorial if Lucid is kind enough to put the effort into creating one. I'm sure there are other ways of doing it as well.

I also created a PS action which pretty much follows the tutorial. If anyone is interested I can post it somewhere for download.

Here is the PS Action I created after following this tutorial. I would suggest that you go through the above tutorial a couple of times first to kind of know what is going on. Also, after the action is run you may need to create a brightness/contrast adjustment layer to increase or decrease as needed. When it runs it will create a duplicate of the image it is run on. Anyone feel free to improve it to add more control (please post improvements so we can all give it a go).

It works good on some images and not so good on others (that goes for the tutorial as well).

That's beautiful, climbers.
I like playing with otherwise unremarkable photos as well.
I re-did this picture using Buzz Pro filters (in PSP) and added texture in Painter.

I can't wait to try it out. And I thank you in advance for the effort required.

BTW.... I took the advice of climbers and checked out your site. You have some wonderful artwork there! Makes my feeble attempts at creativity look so bad I can hardly bear to look at them anymore.

Hi Climbers,

Nice job! I thought I would give it a try. I don't think it came out as good as yours. I did not read the article yet. Just tried to copy the effect in Photoshop.

Here is something I did a few years ago using adobe. I can't remember the plug in name but will dig it up if anyone is interested. I also like the effects created using them. They seems to enable you to look at the photo much different.

This effect really amazes me.

I'd swear you are looking at a pic of a painting.

I wonder how the effect would transfer if printed on some of the textured papers.
