 | Hayes Island Tutorial Hayes Island Effect
This is a tutorial that will take an ordinary Image and give it a painterly effect and when combined with a canvas like texture, the effect becomes believable.
The basics of this effect can be summed up quickly by making three copies of the image and applying different effects to them and then setting the blending modes to soft light. In a nutshell that is all that is done. With some additions just for flair, lets get started.
1. Open image to apply effect to. (Pretty obvious huh?) 2. You will then need to make three copies of the Background layer you can do this by dragging the background layer down onto the create a new layer icon and then dragging the new layer down to the same icon and then again with that layer. You should end up with a layers palette that looks like this.
3. Next you will want to name all the layers. This a great habit to get into as it only makes your work easier. This can be done by simply double clicking on the name of the layers and inserting your own text. We will be naming these layers in relation to the effects that we will be performing on each. Palette knife, Dry Brush, & Smart blur. In that order from bottom to top. Should look like this.
4. Our next step is to actually apply these effects to the layers It is important to remember that all of these steps will not look perfect for every image and that it is all customizable to the image itself. We are going to start at the bottom of the list and go up. In order to do this we need to hide the layers above our layer we want to work on. 5. We are going to be working on the Palette knife layer first. The first step would be to hide the two layers above it; you can do this by clicking the eye icon in each layer to make them invisible.
6. With the Palette knife layer active we now apply the palette knife filter to our layer. (Filter-Artistic-Palette knife) Apply this filter using the following settings Stroke Size- 8 Stroke Detail- 3 Softness- 0

Click OK to apply
7. Our next step is going to be adjusting Saturation of the layer. To do this you bring up the Hue Saturation Dialog box (Image-Adjustments-Hue/Saturation or CTRL+U) and use the following settings
Hue- 0 Saturation- 60 Lightness- 5 Colorize - off

Click OK to Apply
8. The final step for this layer is to apply a Blur to this layer. Do this by applying a Gaussian blur (Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur) with a pixel size of 4.0

Click OK to Apply
9. We can now move on to the next layer (Dry Brush) make sure you make this layer visible by clicking its visibility box to show its eye. With the Dry Brush layer selected, apply the Dry Brush Filter (Filter-Artistic-Dry Brush) and use the following settings.
Brush Size- 3 Brush Detail- 8 Texture- 1

Click OK to Apply
10. Next we move onto the Smart blur layer, again making sure you make this layer visible by clicking its visibility box to show its eye. With the Smart Blur Layer selected, apply the Smart Blur Filter (Filter-Blur-Smart Blur) and use the following settings.
Radius- 15.5 Threshold- 52.0 Quality- Medium (put to low for slow machines and high for extremely fast ones) Mode- Edge Only

Click OK to Apply
11. We are now left with a mostly black with white outlines but what we really want is the exact opposite. To do this you can simply Inverse the Image (Image-Adjustments-Invert or CTRL+ALT+I) so you now have a mostly white image with Black outlines.

ALMOST DONE
12. We can now apply the blending modes that will make this image look the way we have intended. To do this we must select each of our new layers (Smart Blur, Dry Brush, & Palette knife) and set its blending mode to Soft Light. To do this you must select the layer you want to change by clicking on it and using the drop down menu select soft light.

13. You should be able to see a great result now; we are going to add a Texture to our image and a few adjustment layers to make it just right.
14. To make things easier you can now flatten the image by Selecting Merge Visible from the Layers Options drop down list.

15. Now to add the texture. You dont need to use the canvas texture but I feel that it compliments this effect the most. To add Canvas you simply apply the Texturizer filter (Filter-Texture-Texturizer) and you can customize your settings here but something around the default settings are usually good enough.

16. Now onto the adjustment layers, The First will be a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. To do this you just need to simply click the Create new fill or adjustment layer icon located in the layers palette.

17. Once you have the Hue/Saturation Dialog box up you can then make your adjustments that will give your image the look you want

18. The final Adjustment Layer will be a Levels adjustment. Again you can use whatever settings that make your image look the way you like.

Thats pretty much it, you can now frame, Matte, or otherwise embellish your image.
I also created an Action out of these steps, It was created in Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and may not be usable in other versions or software.

I ran through the tutorial and haven't tried the action yet (I always like to do it manually the first few times) but I'm sure it will work good as well.
I've read people say that this effect doesn't work good on people, but I tried it on a couple of my childrens pictures and I thought they came out very good.
Again, thank you. |

That was excellent. I reformatted my hard drives yesterday and didn't get a chance to load my pictures back on the machine so I messed around with one of the XP pictures. |

| Nice Lucid V. My try at the cowboy example.
Edit - just can't figure out how to quite reproduce it exactly, but it is still a nice tut. [text was edited by author 2003-06-18 01:04:09] |

 | Yep, I was trying to figure out how to do the smart blur. I know there is a way, I just couldn't remember how, and I think I had the layers in the wrong order. It was 1:00 A.M. after being out at my favorite watering hole -- Team Discovery Project Hope |
