Actually, I was a member here for over 3 years (cwnorris). I never said anything about people being noobs, people that know what they are doing can also have differing opinions on patch management, among other things. I guess my view is that, if I applied a patch (service packs just being a collection of patches), and it broke something that affected the use of network services for the people that use our network, I would have some explaining to do. And my answer better include, "that didn't happen when I tested it". Not to mention the work I would have to do to fix it. I suppose that is different than applying it to one machine, which a lot of people don't rely on for services.
Perhaps my view of this is tainted by my experience with service packs on NT4, where a few of them were utter crap, and caused many problems (especially when applied by someone who didn't research their ramifications, such as replacing vendor supplied device drivers). Better safe than sorry.
As for credibility, I didn't have much when I was a member |

| reply to Skipdawg I just did the SP4 update on my 2000 PRO machine, so far all seems good. I have noticed one silly thing already that it fixed, I have an HP with the multimedia keyboard (which sux) the only thing that I like that works on the keyboard is the volume knob. SP3 stopped it from working, SP4 fixed it, works fine now. I will have to mess around with the PC and see what else I notice that is different. Something as silly as the volume knob working makes me happy. -- My Old Job Morbid Crap Forum Posts:1545 |

| reply to norris Re: It's officially out now!
said by norris: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ OK, the obvious question is, is there any difference between this official release, and the one that was posted yesterday at the beginning of this thread.
I just installed the one from the link posted yesterday, and would hate to do it all over again with the official release posted today if it's the same thing. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
IMO, anybody who would install a patch or service pack from a link provided by some third-party website, with no page from MS stating that the link is the final release, and legitimate, is asking for trouble. Much less the idea of installing a service pack on production machines without any testing. I see you installed it on DCs and Exchange servers..Scary, and not really a good practice.
I really don't understand everyone's need to have the latest service pack installed, with no research and no testing done, before it's even officially released.
FWIW, we always seem to find the final releases on the Microsoft site a day or two earlier than the official appearance. The same discussion came up when XP SP1 came out. For those who might be worrying -- don't. -- FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. It comes bundled with the software. |

said by Bach : Looks like Q329170 will be part of SP4. That one causes shutdown problems for 3 of 4 workstations. I'll pass for now.
Yep this update causes some systems to hang from my experience. Perhaps they fixed this issue with SP4? I'll wait and see. |

I was one of the lucky ones that had the problems with Q329170, but I have been on sp4 for two days and several reboots without a hitch. |

I saved SP4 to the D drive, and attempted installation from there. Is this a problem or am I missing something here?
