| View Point Media Player
Does anyone know anything about this player that AOL users have and when sending certain types of greetings to friends that may not be on AOL forces them to either load it or not see the greeting that was sent to them. | Well, I know that the ViewPoint Media Player has been in all AOL installation kits for a while now. And it provides some very good graphic effects, like a more powerful version of Flash, and if you try to view something that was coded to work with the Viewpoint player, you do need to download and install it. Depending upon what you are looking at, it may be worth it.
There are privacy issues with it as it includes some powerful tracking and reporting capabilities and each install of it gets a unique global identifier. (I guess it's much like browsing sites with Ads and allowing third-party cookies. That's probably about the exposure level.)
The installation consists of a large number of DLLs that are used with AOL, IE and other applications. As I recall, it is shown in Add/Remove Programs and can be easily uninstalled. The graphic technology is good, but the price is the tracking. -- Use the most powerful combo Firewall/AV/AT package available - "Common Sense" - It can be upgraded daily! |

| AOL uses ViewPoint, but, ViewPoint is not exclusive to AOL. Besides the ability to install on the fly like Flash and other similar tools, you probably need to do searches on the web for all the software that comes packaged with the ViewPoint Media Player. Also, check your various software installation kits and see if they include this package. -- Use the most powerful combo Firewall/AV/AT package available - "Common Sense" - It can be upgraded daily! |
