A reverse blade sword is more like a knife that has only one cutting edge...So the person wielding the sword can fight with the flat edge...

kenshin's reverse blade sword is a samurai sword that is sharpened on the opposite side of the traditional samurai sword. Because he does not want to kill, he can still fight with the conventional styles of the samurai sword, but he won't slice people when he hits them unless he uses his technique where he flips the sword.

Just a clarification: Katana, unlike European swords, are only sharpened on one side - the convex side. This is no biggie, since the katana is designed for slashing, not stabbing. Kenshin uses a sakaba, where it is the concave side.

One thing I always wondered, is it possible to effectively fight with a reversed blade sword in real life?

I am sure that if someone hits you anywhere with a long thin piece of steel/iron with a decent ammount of force, in the right way could break bones even necks. But I am sure in the days of the Samurai no one would actually use such a weapon because when your defending your own life you want the best.

it is very possible to use a reverse blade sword in real life. there have been many samurai that have used them. if they did not work they would have not been continuously made.

Wow thats a good picture of one... I've always been looking for a picture of one, but never found... thats not photoshopped is it?

I think they mention it in the series a couple times, that the sakabatou (reverse bladed sword) is slower than a normal katana because it is blunt on the slashing side, and there is more air resistance.

I know that there are curved blades with the sharp side on the inside groove, like the kubikiri, but they were usually very short blades, used for taking heads. I haven't seen any reference to a reverse bladed katana though in anything I've read.. I thought the sakabatou was just a creation for Kenshin.

HERE is a link to the Japanese Sword Index- lots of good information on Japanese swords, terminology, forging techniques, and history.

The picture I posted is from a Japanese sword site. Here is the sakabatou »www.n-p-s.net/sakabatou.htm . They also carry Aoshi's double kodachi »www.n-p-s.net/kotati03.htm . And here is Shishio's Mugen (I think that's the name of his sword) »www.n-p-s.net/mugenjin.htm .

The sakabatou was made up by the creator of the Kenshin series. I'd like to see a reliable reference that said ANY swordsman used it let alone many.

Swordsmiths are artists, and I doubt you can even find a swordsmith that will forge a blade like that unless he's only interested in money. The ones they sell online for a few hundred bucks are probably cheap machine made replicas. A hand forged blade can cost anywhere from $2000-$10000 depending on the skill and reputation of the smith. And that's just for the blade. Then you have to pay for a professional toshigi to polish the blade, and they charge by the centimeter. An average length blade costs about 2000 USD to polish. Then add another thousand for quality mounting hardware. I'm not sure what the going rate is for a saya(sheath), but I'm sure it's pretty pricey too since they're custom carved for the blade. You basically have to go through 3-4 artisans to get a sword that you can actually use.

As for practical uses, I can see the blunt edge doing alot of damage considering the weight of the blade can easily be enough to break bones when swung with a moderate amount of force. However, using the bladed edge is questionable since the sori(curvature) of the blade makes it feel completely different in your hand when it's being held in the opposite direction.

Well after the Meiji Restoration, the samurai class was abolished, and the privilege to wear swords was revoked. The ban was lifted I believe after WWII which allowed free practice of kenjitsu again.

Its really hard to get a license for a gun in Japan too- even to collect. Most people get replicas. Ken Akamatsu, the creator of Gunsmith Cats (anime/manga) has a large gun replica collection- he can't get licenses for real guns.

Like mrbtheguy said, you need a license from a martial arts school and have to be registered at a police station to have one.
