Captain's Log: June 2003

Well gang, June was another mostly troublefree month from a TD perspective. Things are rolling along fairly well. That's good, because it gives us an opportunity to discuss other things. At times like this, we can focus more on Team-building and getting to know each other better.

We continue to gain new members almost every day. I don't know where they come from most of the time, but I'm glad they're here! Spread the word about the important projects we're working on.

Project Hope
Project Hope's progress has been summarized quite well by those in charge, so I won't go into too much detail here. Suffice to say that number-crunching is very near! In June we got parts inventories from the hosts, and decided which PSU and motherboards we're going with. We should definitely have some working machines in place by the end of July.

UD
Well, the TD juggernaut continued its relentless march to the #9 spot overall! We passed the Dutch Power Cows in early June, and set our sights on [H]ardOCP. We're ultimately here for the research, but the points/stats have their place as well. Sometimes we debate the importance of the points, and stress the importance of the research. But let's not forget that even though some people focus on the points, they're still contributing to the research! They've chosen this project over a myriad other projects. That choice alone indicates their dedication to the Cause. We're all in this together!

We're still getting mostly Smallpox proteins to crunch on, rather than Cancer. For some folks that's a good thing. Other people don't like it one bit. Just remember that you have a choice. To set your UD crunching preferences, follow the instructions in the FAQ: »Team Discovery UD FAQ {Archived} »What projects can I crunch?

UD was voted the most popular DC project in a recent poll: »koti.mbnet.fi/aquarius/links/lin···wer.html The results only show what's most popular among people who voted (not the general populace), but still it's interesting to see UD on top of the heap. Perhaps UD's recent advertising has paid off. It could also be that the PatriotGrid projects (like anthrax and smallpox) are bringing more people into the fold. Anyway, it's all good!

TSC
Well, we tried to have a TSC crunch-a-thon in June, but with mixed results. We gave it a good go, but the project didn't cooperate. About 2/3 the way through we stopped getting new WUs.

On the bright side, however, TRI has made some recent improvements. They've upgraded their servers, upgraded their internet bandwidth, and issued a new version of the program. I personally haven't had a problem with it in the last few days, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all is well.

DCExec
We are still needing news updates for the BBR front page on a biweekly basis. If there is ever any Team-related news you want to broadcast to the BBR community, write up a paragraph and send it to me. I'll get it to the appropriate people. Like any other reporter some of your submissions may not make it through, but the more we submit, the more that will make it!

That's it for now. Crunch on, and have fun.

So TSC seems to have been fixed. I may have to sneak install it on a couple computers at school.

If there is anything we can do to make TD more welcoming for people outside the US, please speak up! We want our team to be open for everyone.

We're glad you're here, Budwieser.

Re: Captain's Log: June 2003

Thanks Bruce, but what i actually meant was that i feel an ` Outsider` because this this is an American based site and i don`t see too many people here from the UK.!
Matter of interest, How many people here `Crunchin` are actually from England.
PS:Thanks for the comment Ray. Appreciated mate.
Neil.
