Speed Boost w/ Linksys NR041?

I have a Terajet 110 with a Linksys BEFSR41 router, and get speeds around 6000+

I had the chance to try the NR041 on my network and noticed a speed bump. Is this normal? Why?

You shouldn't have unless you have very old firmware on your Linksys. What firmware is on it - »192.168.1.1/Status.htm ?

The Terajet 110, as far as I can see from the forum FAQ and past threads, is supposed to be capable of the same speeds as the Terjajet 210, 8000+ kbps. No one has reported seeing the "10 Mbit WAN port negotiation issue" with either of the Terajets. With that MODEM, it shouldn't have mattered which router you were using. Normally that issue only would affect SB users. Have you checked the settings in the BEFSR41 to make sure you didn't change any of the default settings at some point in a manner that would have affected your speeds?

The only thing I'd guess at is someone mentioned (unless I'm imagining it) that the latest BEFSR41's have a 10/100mb WAN port and maybe it's not meshing well with the TJ110.

I have a BEFSR41 and it works fine with the TJ and I get 8000+ speeds.

Did you try the OOL FTP test too and see what that shows?

How much of a "speed bump" did you see with the NR041?

"Speed Bump?" As in slowdown? I never had a terajet. I have the the SB4100 with NRR041 and see maximum speeds on OOL, 8000+:)

I mean "speed bump" as in a speed boost. On my Terajet with a BEFSR41, It was constantly at 6000+. Radio Shack on Broadway in Bayonne had the NR041 on sale for $39.99, and it's listed as being "discontinued" on the Radio Shack computers. There was 1 NR041 left, so I took it home to just see what happens, and the speed went up to7800+, and I hit 8000 last night, which hasn't happened since before I got the router in the first place!

I always wanted to try the NR041 because I thought I read somewhere in here that it was faster than the BEFSR41, but I also read that if I had a Terajet, or the Toshiba, that the speed wouldn't matter. I could've always returned it to Radio Shack if there wasn't a speed boost, but the numbers look good here!

THESE ARE WITH THE NR041:

I'm not sure why you were seeing such slow speeds with your BEFSR41. I have several friends who have them, and with Toshiba and Terayon modems all get 8000+ speeds with recent vintage firmware. Are you sure that your firmware upgrade was successful?

The firmware on the BEFSR41 went through without a hitch. I used MacTFTP Client [Cbn] to install, since I'm using a Mac. Interesting, huh?

That is curious. The only wild card here is a Mac and not a PC. I cannot see why that would make a difference. Maybe some other Mac users can relate to this.

The BEFSR41 is a version 2.

Also, can anyone answer if there is ANY kind of difference, AT ALL, between the BEFSR41, and the NR041?

The main and really only significant difference between the Network Everywhere NR041 and Linksys BEFSR41 is the fact that the NR041 has always been manufactured with a 10/100 Mbit WAN port. The first generation BEFSR41 came only with a 10 Mbit WAN port, and people using SB MODEMs would experience the "10 Mbit WAN port negotiation issue" with it. The NR041 has been recommended by many people here because it is a relatively inexpensive router with a faster WAN port that has the same capabilities as the BEFSR41. The NR041 is even manufactured by Linksys, just branded under a different name. A look at the product data sheets for both routers shows that they are identical in pretty much every other aspect. You can see for yourself here:

»ftp://ftp.linksys.com/datasheet/befsr41ds.pdf
»www.networkeverywhere.com/products/nr041.asp

GeekNJ See Profile mentioned above that the latest generation of BEFSR41 routers may now come with a 10/100 Mbit WAN port. It's odd that you saw a speed difference between the two routers, since you have a Terajet that should not show the signs of the "10 Mbit WAN port" issue. Regardless, it seems that, if you have noticed that significant an improvement in speeds with the NR041, regardless of the actual reason behind it, you should probably hang on to it.

hmm I just got the linksys befsr41 like in June. I'll let you guys know if i get good speed with it or not. Almost bought the other model.

Edit: I just tried my connection w/ the router and its no good. Fastest i get from the OOL speed test is 700+KB/s and with the speakeasy test im back to sharkfin speed (only a slight improvement over the sharkfin 4800 vs 5500).

I don't know what you expected with that router. You have read enough to see that you need a NR041 or equivalent.

I didn't expect much from my router, but I was just responding to Rainbow's comment since I bought my router around June..

Rainbow got her info from a GeekNJ post. Not sure where GeekNJ got his info. The Linksys website still says it has a 10Mbit WAN port. So do the boxes on the shelf at our local BestBuy. If there is a new version with a 100Mbit WAN port, it must be really new.

It appears that a v2 BEFSR41 has a 10/100 megabit WAN port. It is fairly new and you have to read the box to make sure you get the right one.

It is just easier to get a "known" product that works especially if you order off the Internet and cannot see the box to see if it a v2. If you go into a store, you can read the box.

Maybe you didn't set the BEFSR41's MTU correctly? I know the NR041 has a default of 1500. So check that...
