 Access to Internet via PDA

Has anyone had any success acessing the Internet via a PDA using the 2WIRE home portal? My ipaq can see the network but I cannot surf via Internet Explorer.

Specs:
IPAQ 3975
2WIRE Home Portal - Wireless
Wave2Net IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN Solutions CompactFlash Card
RoadRunner

Any help is appreciated.

HI,

I had the same problem with my Sony Clie. In order to get it to work, I had to assign an IP address to the PDA, and configure all the other network settings manually on the PDA. The 2Wire web set provides all the information you need to manually congifure your device IP addresses, etc. For some reason, the Homeportal would not assign an IP address to the PDA dynamically, eventhough it did connect to the network. Once I hard coded the PDA, all network functions worked properly, including surfing the net.

Thank you so much for your reply. FINALLY, I find someone that understands my issue. I've talked to 2WIRE, Time Warner, and HP and no one seems to be able to help...it's always call the other...

Here's my first question...(I am a newbie to networking)...how did you assign the IP address?

I think I'm further along than when I posted. Now, I receive "The page you are looking for cannot be found." I thought it would be fairly simple to connect my handheld...but....

I'm running PPC2002...ANY additional help is greatly appreciated.

HI,

Here's the information from the 2Wire web site on how to use static IP's with the Homeportal:

Question
Can I use static IP addresses for my home computers and appliances?

Answer
Yes. The HomePortal reserves the first 32 addresses in the HomePortal network subnet for static use. By default the HomePortal uses the non-routable 172.16.0.0 / 255.255.0.0 subnet. Addresses 172.16.1.1 - 172.16.1.32 are reserved for static IP addresses. The HomePortal's DHCP server delivers addresses 172.16.1.33 - 172.16.1.250 to dynamic IP clients on your HomePortal network.

Note: The HomePortal Home Network IP address scheme can also use 192.168.0.0 / 255.255.0.0 and 10.0.0.0 / 255.255.0.0, or you can configure your own subnet.

The HomePortal supports both Dynamic and Static IP addressing on your HomePortal network. The HomePortal is a DHCP server and will automatically assign an IP address to a network device upon request. However, you can manually configure a static IP address for any device on your HomePortal network.

The first 32 addresses (.1 - .32) in the address range are allocated to static IP addresses. The next 218 addresses (.33 - .250) are allocated to the HomePortal’s DHCP server to deliver to dynamic clients. The last 4 addresses are reserved (.251 - .254).

Below are the settings for the three home network IP range options offered by the HomePortal :

Default Settings:
Static: 172.16.1.1 - .32
Dynamic: 172.16.1.33 - .250
Reserved: 172.16.1.251-.254
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 172.16.0.1
DNS: 172.16.0.1 Option 1:
Static: 192.168.1.1 - .32
Dynamic: 192.168.1.33 - .250
Reserved: 192.168.1.251-.254
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1 Option 2:
Static: 10.0.1.1 - .32
Dynamic: 10.0.1.33 - .250
Reserved: 10.0.1.251-.254
Subnet: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 10.0.0.1
DNS: 10.0.0.1

***************

Remember, you must assign an IP address within the first 32 range in order for this to work. For example, I assigned my Clie an address of 172.16.1.29, a subet Mask of 255.255.0.0, and the gateway (the IP of the homeportal itself) of 172.16.0.1. Get your DNS values from your ISP, and you are good to go.

Thanks a million! I really appreciate all of the information. I'll give it a shot.
