[Project Hope] Chairman Update June 9 - July 12

This is something that is long overdue.
I was holding off on it in hopes things would be a little more in order, then they are at the moment,
so I can just have good news to report.
But good news or bad news I feel that it’s important that the members know where we currently stand.
With that said, I will do a quick re-cap of what is new and the
changes since my last Chairman Update. (May 29-June 8)
»[Project Hope] May 29- June8 Chairman Update
----------------------------------------------------------

First an update on where we stand financially;
This was an update that Kristi recently did.
»TD Project Hope Donations as of 7/6/03
In that post you will see that Peter,
Went ahead and updated the project hope home page.
(So we are current as far as that goes at the moment)

We still need to do an update on all the members, but that should be happening here shortly.
(This became a little bit of an issue when it was time to vote,
But everyone that has access & wanted to vote was able to cast there vote.)

-----------------------------------------------------------

Since the last update we went ahead and had votes on all the major parts.
This post gives a list of all the parts that we voted for the blades.
»[Project Hope] CPU & Memory we will use
(Please disregard the UPS price as that will change,
I’ll explain this further in this post).

-------------------------------------------------------------

On 6-18-2003 Cherie made this post;
»Soyo DragonPlus
As you can see she very kindly offered a blade for this project.
Jeff will be the recipient of this blade.
And he should be receiving it any day now.
(It was sent out during the week.
Cherie can give us the exact date if she reads this.)
I was hoping to do a chairman’s update when Jeff had the blade and it was crunching.
(This way we there would be at least some crunching to report)
But hopefully this will be the case my next update.

------------------------------------------------------------

Currently Fire100 brought something to our attention in regards with the UPS.
We have been looking at the power requirements and realized we will need a stronger UPS.
So now with that said we will probably have to go with the APC 500 and
spend a little more then first anticipated.
If our members or teammates can find a good deal on this item please add it to that post.
It will save us time and hopefully some money.

------------------------------------------------------------

Another set back that we have run into is with Newegg.com
(It’s a minor set back, but none the less something we will have to deal with).
When Kristi, tried ordering parts for our 4 hosts she could not do it.
It appears that according to New eggs policy you
can’t order to a place that does not match the ordering address.
Kristi went ahead and wrote them a letter to explain what we are doing.
They came back and said that they can’t make an exception.
We then decided to call them and see if we could get somewhere that way.
Again we where encountered with the same results as in the e-mail.

What we are thinking about doing, is cutting each host
a check for the exact
amount that they will need for the blades.
This way they can go ahead and order it to there address and New Egg
won’t have any problems with that.
(If there is another option please use this post to mention it).

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully my next update will have all the hosts with parts and working on setting up the blades.
As the hosts get everything set up and the blades start crunching
It will be up to them to keep us updated.
How the blades are doing, (if there are any problems with the blades)
maybe some pictures of there set up and other items that might come along.

I believe we have made incredible progress as a team in putting all of this
together and hopefully we will soon see results from all our hard work.

It has indeed been incredible progress, but when you have incredible people it's easier than not. Thanks Slava, great job one and all. Oh, and a Bronx cheer for NewEgg, have they never heard of every other online companies policy of gift ordering and sending items to various addresses. Results here we come.

For whatever it's worth...I just shot a letter off to Newegg requesting the re-examine their delivery options/policies. Especially when dealing with a not-for-profit purchasing entity that is dedicated to solving dreaded diseases and the like. I cannot believe they weren't being helpful in this respect.

Thank you, Slava for the informational updates!

I've run into other online businesses that won't ship to any address but the credit card address. In my case, I wanted the shipments sent to my work address since nobody is home during the day to receive the package and I didn't want it sitting on the front porch (or me having to drive to the terminal to pick it up). I've found it to be about a 50/50 chance of them doing it or not.

As far as the UPS goes - I don't really see a need to waste money on that. A few lost hours during a power blackout is NOT worth the money - considering that the money could be used to help build another crunching machine. Surge protection is utterly important, but backup is NOT.

I would much prefer any money that we would spend on UPS go toward buying more parts for more crunchers.

Great update Slava....

I agree with the captain on this.....a few hours in a power outage is not that critical...I would rather see the money go towards better and more equipment....

I think a vote on the subject may be in order.

I agree babacher, I was seeing they were already planning on getting some 350's, and a 350 is not enough to keep an XP 2500 up, to allow a proper shutdown, I think surge protection is good enough as well.

Re: [Project Hope] Chairman Update June 9 - July 12

This is just my two cents.. One can't crunch during a power outage anyway. I say let's just get power strips and be done with it. That's what I use anyway.. A nice APC power strip.

I also agree about only needing a decent surge protector. In fact, I stated that in the tdprojecthope project forum, yesterday afternoon.

It seems this is the common trade of thought.
Shall we just go with this?

Or do you feel this requires a vote from the members?

I say either APC, or the one I recommended Tripp-Lite, some of the trip-lites like the one I suggested over at the project website, have higher ratings than even the APC's, at a lower cost.

This is the one, that I have decided to go with organization wide at work, it has not let me down yet, very high Joule rating with 2350 joules.

If everybody wanted me to, I couldn't promise anything, I might be able to get these at even a lower cost than listed on the site, with my Account Manager at CDW.

I wouldn't be able to talk to him though, till next week.
If you needed phone protection though, that would be the super7tel, which adds about $10 to the cost, but my censes it, that most will have an ethernet connection to the blades correct?

I might also mention, that this stip has a huge 7 foot cord on it, so power placement usually isn't a concern with this one.

Thanks for all of your hard work everyone.

I also agree that the UPS is not necessary, as long as the motherboards will auto-restart upon the resumption of power.
Most MoBo's do this, but you may want to make sure the selected one will.
I see no problem with providing checks and shopping list to the Host for them to buy the equipment.

I am glad that people are in agreement in just going with a power strip.

As a matter of fact, this one might even work, for just a few blades:

It's a 7 outlet with 1270 Joules of protection with a 6 foot power cord.

This one is only $12.89 plus shipping and handling, and includes phone/modem protection.

No doubt APC is great, but to get one with a high Joule rating, over 1000, you are going to be looking at $25 + for one, if you look, the ones for around 10-20 only have joule ratings of 400 or so from APC
