| Connection keeps dropping
I've had to reboot my modem twice in the last 2 hours because the modem seems to just stop responding. The error log shows:

I think the carrier to noise is out of spec a little bit? Am I correct? If that's the case, why would it be out of spec? It has always been in spec and nothing has changed on my end in the last year that the modem has been directly connected to the pole and not going through any splitters...

| reply to Jmartz i think im having the same problems too. My internet connection dropped like 2-3 times a day and I can't connect unless i unplug my surboard 5100.

| snowpeas, your downstream level is out of spec.
Power Level -18 dB DOCSIS Limits: (-15 dB...15 dB)
Is your MODEM located off of any splitters? It should be placed off of the first split of the incoming cable line. If your incoming line is connected directly to the MODEM, you will have to give Tech Support a call. -- "You turn if you want to. The Ladys not for turning."-Margaret Thatcher, 10 October 1980 |

| OK, i just switched it. And it says my downstream powerlevel is -17dB. My splitter is a 2 way spliter, but it doesn't say which one is the first. But it doesn't matter its a 2way and i switched it and i still have a -17dB. Should I IM engineer88, like what blohner had told the guy? |

with -17dB a service call is in order... It might drop a bit more when it get's warmer and then you will be in real trouble E88 can't fix the low downstream for you... You need to setup and appointment for them to come out... -- I am addicted to speed --- OOL speed that is --- ~Help find a cure for cancer~Proud Member Team Discovery |

| reply to Jmartz Well I called them up a few mins ago and they said that my modem connecting directly to the incoming line was at -3.5dB. And i found out that i had 2 splitters. So thats why my signal was at -18.
Anyways isn't it possible for them to make the direct line signal at like +3.5 so that w/ 2 splitters i'll get -14.5dB? Does it matter if the signal is -17dB? its out of range but i can still connect to the internet. Will I get slower downloads with -17dB? [text was edited by author 2003-07-14 18:03:59] |

| They can't arbitrarily "make" the signal do anything. It is dependent on the wiring and on the number of splitters used, among other factors. You may need to have your wiring replaced if it is damaged or aging. The MODEM should really be placed off the first splitter on its own run if you have a need for using more than one splitter on the direct line. It would be best to have them come out and do any wiring work necessary. If you leave your signals out of spec, you are likely to see disconnections, instability and poor performance. You should get them cleaned up.

| reply to Jmartz Ok After hearing what Irish Shark had said, I removed one of the two spliters that I had and I ended having -13db. So I left my computer for an hour or so and when I came back, it was disconnected again. When I restarted the modem and check the powerlevel it went to -14dB.
So now i know its not the powerlevel problem. Do you guys have any idea whats causing my modem to disconnect? |

| The signal level is currently in range, but that doesn't mean that it always is. At the time that you tested it, it registered at -14dB. It is possible the signal level was at -16dB when you experienced the disconnection. You may very well still have a signal level problem.
As I said above, the signal level problem could be caused by poor wiring. It is really time for you to bite the bullet and schedule a tech support appointment for them to inspect your setup and, if need be, redo any wiring. There is nothing you can do from your end to fix the problem. -- "You turn if you want to. The Ladys not for turning."-Margaret Thatcher, 10 October 1980 |
