Install it, play around with the server...practice creating different accounts with different rights. Get yourself a book which will help alot. Look for a CNA (certified novell administrator) book which is novell's entry-level certificate. NW6 management is very slick compared to previous versions...its all done on a web page or through a java app called ConsoleOne. If you have any specific questions click on my name, scroll down and from there you can e-mail me. -- Are you afraid of daemons? |

| reply to summoner Hi- I am setting up NetWare 6 ask I write this post but I have a few questions...
1) Is there a website that can give me a basic tutorial in creating novell login scripts (Map Drives and printers)?
2) Is there a website that can explain NetWare file permissions to me? I am a little confused about how to set them up.
Thank you! |

Login scripts are explained here. »www.novell.com/documentation/lg/···dex.html
Netware file permissions are also referred to as Trustee Assignments (think of it this way...the server trusts this user/group etc... with these rights) This is a good page »www.uvm.edu/cit/eLAN/trustee-pri···?tp=true
You can also search Novell's knowledgebase at »support.novell.com/search/kb_index.jsp I also highly recommend getting a book. It will make it alot easier to have the facts/answers in front of you rather than always searching for them. -- Are you afraid of daemons? |

| thank you once again for the information it was very helpful however I have one more question...
when I install NetWare 6 I get the following error right after I create the sys volume:
"failed to create system volume nwconfig 6-59"
I have tried doing the express install and accepting all defaults and running the custom install and changing the SYS volume size. I have no idea what this error means.
Any ideas would be helpful -Thank you very much

| reply to summoner So i have my server all setup everything seems to running well but of course I have a question...
I read the page about scripts and a created the following script
map S16:=K:=HOME:USERNAME
HOME is the vol name and USERNAME would be the users directory
This script only maps to the root of volume but I want to map directly to the users directory.
Thank you for all your help I really appreciate it! |

Heh we should have a netware forum for stuff like this. Seriously since this is a broadband pics forum, e-mail me in the future summoner@optonline.net. Ok that script is somewhat wrong. You can map either a search drive or plain network drive. I beleive you can assign a drive letter to a plain drive, but not to a search drive. The search drive will be mapped according to what drive letters are unused on the workstation although there are ways to force a search drive letter. The command would be MAP K:=%FILE_SERVER\SYS:USERS\%LOGIN_NAME Notice the use of variables, you can give to a bunch of users the same script and user alex will get a mapping pointing to k:\users\alex and sam will get k:\users\sam. The %fileserver variable also can do this, depending on which server the users login to the network. Search drives are used just like a folder you would place in the dos path directory. Like PATH=c:\windows\command MAP s16:=sys:public. It puts the network drive in the dos path. A plain network mapping is good enough to access your files etc... -- Are you afraid of daemons? |

Volume:You_Server_sys.your_context Path: \username
Thats how i did it on my office and home. -- encap frame-relay |

| Welcome to BroadBandReports and good job on the wiring...structured cabling looks so good when you take the time to do it right. Unless you have some immediate upgrades planned, you should invest in some filler panels to cover up those empty spots in your rack. Always helps the "ohh and ahh" factor when management tours the new datacenter and its time to ask for a budget increase. What kind of infrastructure is in those racks? -- Are you afraid of daemons? |

| reply to summoner Those racks will be completely full in the next month or so. We're hardcore:) We run as pure a Novell enviroment as possible, with all Netware 6 servers (and some BETA NW 6.5 servers) as well as GroupWise 6.5 and GWAVA 2.5. In the racks you see some data and voice cabling as well as a Nortel BCM 2.5 to the left (the white units in the left rack) as well as an Extreme Alpine 3808 in the right rack. If you want hardcore networking switches, buy Extreme. We also run some intense ZenWorks for Desktops 4.0.1b configurations as well as much much more! Thanks for the OOHS and AHHS! As you all know wiring takes more than time and patience, it also deprives you of your natural hair color and several pints of blood. SC |

| reply to summoner The white equipment on the right rack is brand new Panasonic web enabled video surveillance hardware. Above those is a Cisco Router and Firewall and below the Extreme behemoth is a few hundred pounds of batteries that keep the whole thing up during outages. Each cabinet has doors that lock with Plexiglas fronts as well as fans in the top to increase airflow and prevent dust buildup. The cabinet to the right of these two has a few servers and a rack mounted monitor and keyboard. SC |
