so it seems to me that if these numbers were corrected (they would have to be supplied by your isp) you would regain connectivity to the outside world.

Those numbers are supplied by the ISP.
Locking the thread - it seems to have ended up on the first page.

My TCP/IP numbers (right click Direcway icon on the desktop) are:
IP address: 10.80.45.62
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 66.82.24.21
Preferred DNS: 198.77.116.8
Alternate DNS: 207.217.120.83

I got tired of reading the thread after 1 page but something from your initial post rung a bell. I'm not sure if you know much about how IP addresses work but with the arrangement you have listed, it is saying that your "subnet" consists of the addresses 10.80.45.1 - 10.80.45.254. As such, your computer is unable to reach the Default gateway which is at 66.82.24.21. The default gateway would be the router between your modem and the internet through which all internet traffic to and from your computer flows.

The default gateway is the router that enables you to communicate with any other subnet on the internet so it seems to me that if these numbers were corrected (they would have to be supplied by your isp) you would regain connectivity to the outside world.

In several of your other posts, you seemed to indicate that you were connected to your access point but could not access the internet. That would be a symptom of the error I'm describing.

Hope this helps.

Glad to hear it. The LCCU utility should help your performance on the laptop if you can get it downloaded now and run that on the laptop. In the meantime, follow Seagreen's post and enjoy your WAP!!!

seagreen posting from client machine:
Your settings match mine with the following exception:
- on the DNS tab, at the bottom, I have a check in the box that says "Register this connection's addresses in DNS"

In your browser settings do you have the proxy configured correctly?
Tools => Internet Options => Connections tab => LAN Settings => check mark in use a proxy server => Advanced => 192.168.0.1:83 in HTTP field only.

If you already have those settings, then go back one screen and put a check mark in "Automatically detect Settings" under Automatic configuration. Then try to browse.

ARE YOU SITTING DOWN, SEAGREEN, SATBURN and F.A.B.????

I'm CONNECTED!! WHOOPEEE! Maybe it took some time for the settings I made to settle in, but I am now connected to the Internet! The connection is slow, but I'll worry about that later.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Applied changes from FAQ 6473. Looks like computer is trying to connect to a site, but then fails.

On the laptop, let's look at the tabs on TCP/IP / Advanced. Maybe something there isn't right:

DNS tab:

DNS Server addresses:
192.168.0.1
198.77.116.8

Checked for "Append primary and connection specific DNS addresses."
Checked for "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix"

DNS suffix for this connection: www.direcway.com
All other entries are blank.

WINS tab:
Nothing in "WINS addresses, in order of use"
Checked for "Enable LMHOSTS lookup"
NetBios Setting:
Checked for "Default"

Options tab:
"Optional settings" TCP/IP filtering"

Forgot to mention that I cannot access anything on the links on the E-bay page. Clicking a link brings up a named URL (i.e., www.xxx.com) and I get a page cannot be displayed error (the usual one).

GADZOOKS!! I got onto the e-bay page. Some errors, but I'm in by putting »66.135.20.88 in the browser bar.

Be still my heart.

This is a long shot, because I have NO idea what I'm talking about, but look at the listing I sent from ipconfig /all. One item is about IP routing (No) -- is my computer not converting addresses (like www.direcpc.com) into IP addresses?

Again, I'm just flailing here, and that IP routing may mean zilch.

Interesting. With that URL address in the browser address bar, a screen came up and I got this message, exactly as shown:

"Forbidden

"You don't have permission to access / on this server.

"Apache/1.3.9 Server at bahamut.direcpc.com Port 80"

Not sure what this all means. Did I actually connect to that site, but was forbidden entry?

I've never used the LCCU - does it put the DNS servers in for the client machine's NIC?

No it doesn't, or at least it didn't on my Win 98 laptop, I haven't tried it on an XP client to see.

countryjoe:
Earlier you stated you could ping the ip address for direcway.com, try putting "http://198.77.116.39" in the browser address bar of your laptop and see if that works. Just want to make sure your problem is you can't get DNS resolution and not that you can't get to the internet at all.

My host and client computers are both XP (Pro on the laptop, although I only installed Pro because nothing was working with XP Home on the lap, but this did not change anything with respect to the satellite connection).

My Internet Connections tab looks like your son's, except that I don't have Wi-Fi. My 1394 connection is the same. In LAN or High Speed Internet section, I show the "Wireless Network Connection, enabled; device is the Instant Wireless Network PC card. I have the same items in the Bridge section, and both are disabled.

This is a screenshot of the network connections from my son's XP Pro laptop (a wireless ICS client machine).
I believe you get the Satellite Connection icon when both the Host and the Client machine are WinXP.
