I don't listen to a scanner (mainly because it's a little outta my price range right now) but I have an airband receiver which I use when I go to Toronto airport to watch planes. Geeky enough for ya

Pretty lame listening to other people's phone calls. Hope that's a joke.

Back in school in the early 90's I worked in Radio Shack. People used to ask all the time if they could get cell phones on scanners. I used to love making those kind of comments Oddly, I still sold a lot of scanners.

You don't know what you're picking up, and sometimes you've listened to part of a conversation before you realise it's a personal phone call. Then it sort of becomes the loud argument in the apartment next to you; you can't help but hear it. That being said, people just don't know how unsecure cordless and analog cellular communication is.

No, I don't have one. It's right there on my wishlist with the shortwave radio.

Not the panasonic with 2 antennas, one for 2.4 the other for 900.

look a uniden's TRU line
they have regular "phony 2.4" and TRU 2.4
two years ago I bought a Uniden TRU346 to my mother

I bought a scanner to my father when he retired, much more interesting than TV. :-D

I don't have time to use my good old radio shack PRO2006

If you're looking for a professional radio stuff, google for ELKEL, much better that your local rat.shack :-D

Those Panasonics are digital or DSS cordless. Which means they shouldn't be able to be picked up. Uniden TRU's are really good as well. But yes, 2.4's are designed for more security, and the vast majority of them are digital which means they won't be picked up by scanners. Unless of course, you have one of those $39.95 Memorex jobs from Walmart. Really, the best way to ensure your cordless is secure is to make sure it's digital.

It's about 5 years old? I can't remember when I bought it.

Radio Shack Pro-66

I mainly use it to listen to trunked police frequencies, General Motors (where my dad works), weather, OPP (when im on the 401) and.

As for the 900MHZ phones. Some phone calls get kicked out because their phones automatically swtitches channels (frequencies) to eliminate static..or have to be manually pressed to switch. Therefore.. most of the time I don't get get the whole call. I don't really sit and listen to all of it.. get's boring.. I just see who's up at night in the city talking on the phone.

One time tho... I got the last 4 digits of a phone number...and an ICQ number! lol.. this was mean but..I messaged that person on icq saying.. " I tapped your lines.. I know where you live "...didn't get a reply. I was 13 when I did that.

You can get some pretty funny police calls.. such as this

Dispatch: " We have a code ### " (whatever it was) Woman complaining that a gentleman is yelling in front of her apartment with a basball bat on (so and so street).

Or this one is sad but kinda funny in a way.

Woman " Could you please send an ambulance.. "
Dispatch " Paramedics are on the way "

10 mins later

Woman " Where's the ambulance? "
Dispatch " Mam, the ambulance will be there shortly "

10 mins later

Woman " The ambulance isn't here "
Dispatch " We'll dispatch another one. "

Few mins later

Ambulance that didn't arrive " Is this is correct address? " *confirming address number and name*
Dispatch " That was 728 not 7208 "
Dispatch " Return to the station, I've already dispatched another one.

Not the exact words but it was something like that.

Anyway... just curious to see who does listen to scanners.

Scanners are very interesting to listen to. My mom has owned a scanner since the early 90's. There have been a few times when I was a teenager she heard my name on the scanner. I was innocent though, I never got into trouble!

I can easily tap into cordless phone conversations by picking up my 900 MHz cordless to dial up, then pull the plug on the base reciever. It wants to keep that same frequency open and usually (instantly) syncs up to other cordless phone base recievers in my apartment.

I discovered this by accident, when the power went out in my building and I happened to be on the phone. You have to walk in just the right spot to pick up a signal.

What annoys me is I'll sometimes pick up other cordless phones randomly while I'm talking on mine.

I think you can use a baby monitor to pick up some phones.

I bascially feel like I'm on broadcast radio whenever I use my cordless phone...I'm sure there are tons of people picking me up accidentally or otherwise.

I used to have a GE cordless phone, you could here a radio station playing in the background when you turned it on. And sometimes I could hear conversations...not clearly, very quiet, and with a lot of static so it was incoherent. I don't know who it was, but it appeared to be two English female speakers, and they were almost ALWAYS yakking away all times of the day.

Anyone else have interesting stories about scanners?

Just being Captain Obvious here but...you do know that is a federal crime right? We have a 'leakage' tech that drives our cable systems with all sorts of crazy scanning devices to find RF faults and he has to take great care not to listen in on frequencies such as 900MHZ as we can get in a lot of trouble for that.

I understand you can listen to such material but you can't talk about it. Talking about it *is* a crime.

The way I heard it is...unless you modify the scanner to pick up other frequencies which it wasn't made to do...then that's illegal. Other than that.. You can listen to anything to pick up with an unmodified scanner, but not release any personal information for future benefits.

In all honesty, I really don't think you are too far off the mark here James. I believe a lot of our communications are at least logged and available to be delved into down the road, if a need arises. I don't believe there is any such thing as privacy when it comes to electronic communications. The NSE has equipment that scanner enthusiasts can only dream about.
