[Other] Dual WAN Ethernet Routers DSL + Cable

I'm interested in a hardware or software router for less than $500.00 that supports 2 WAN ethernet internet connections like xDSL + Cable. After reading here for a few hours and scouring the Net, I have come up with the following hardware routers.

Can anyone suggest other hardware routers -or- software for x86 or Mac hardware that can support 2 internet connections? Which perform well or poorly? Thanks for your suggestions and opinions.

DUAL WAN ETHERNET INTERFACES

Edimax BR6524 $189.99
Nexland pro800 Turbo $299.99
Hawking FR24 $60.00
Zero One Technology AF420b ?
Xterasys XR-4106 $179.00
Longshine LCS-883R-DSL-2W $130.00
Ovislink MH-200 ?
Hotbrick VPN Firewall 600/2 $499.00
TRENDware/Trendnet TEW-SR216 ---all Wireless LAN, coming 8/2003

QUAD WAN ETHERNET INTERFACES

Edimax BR6541 $294.99

you got an extra machine to load linux on?

if so, load linux and put three ethernet cards in and you've got a multi-homed router, attach a switch to the other lan card and your lan is surfing with a multihomed connection.

*note* to a novice linux user, this can be impossible.

I have loaded Astaro Security Linux and it has a nice web setup interface. The only drawback is the free version has some sort of limit to the number of concurrent connections it supports. I plan to have >40 gaming computers running so that may be an issue.

Linux doesn't scare me but I am a relative n00b when it comes to manually editing its setup files. I have more than enough hardware but I would need a premade distro. n00b + Linux = very hackable router!

Another multi-WAN capable router is the iSurf Janus family from AmplifyNet.

You can have it; working, on-time or on-budget. Pick two.

Thank you for finding that router.

So far it looks like availability is limited here in the USA. Press release from 8/02 puts this unit at $995. Looks to have robust throughput and some very useful features.

Thats without the modules so you would have to buy those also. Unless you want it for a paper weight.

Thanks for the suggestion but that clearly exceeds my price point included in the first sentence above. I had a Cisco 2620 before and it far exceeded my needs. This time I'm looking to match price and performance to the project. Makes my pocket book happier!

Take a look at Mikrotik. It's only $45, and they also have a free version. »www.mikrotik.com/

Good price, nice features, and it is a complete Operating System which will reduce vulnerabilities. Couldn't find connection fail-over capability.

Thanks for the link.

To find the Nexland website, I get redirected to »www.symantec.com/specprog/nexland/

I can find hardware for sale on WWW, but Symantec does not seem to have anything to say?

Nexland was bought by Symantec and the Pro800 Turbo is now the VPN 200. They colored it yellow and now charge $900 for it. Xincom has a dual wan router out now in the $200-250 range. I started a thread not too long ago about the same thing. You can see some info there.

For $499.00 this is interesting. »www.hotbrick.com/vpn600.html

Even so, it really does not utilize both connections for the same session. »www.hotbrick.com/manual/manual.pdf

Nexland "sounded" better to me; and not just the price.

Do you have a web link?

I've just noticed this dual wan from Hawking $64.95 »www.hawkingtech.com/prodSpec.php?ProdID=101 I'm not sure why I didn't check this one out before since it was among the routers in the first post and is cheap.

over the Symantec Firewall/VPN 200
Looks more expensive than Hawking but more legitimate in having load balancing dual WAN support.

Hawking TEch is for backup only from what i've read off a review site. Meaning no useful load-balancing.

That seems to be the case.

The manual for the Xincom dual wan router has a lot of interesting features. It really does not do bandwidth management -- something I'm keeping an eye out for.

The Xincom does manage bandwidth, since it load-balances. Load-balancing is pretty much what you mean when you say bandwidth management since the Xincom can set load percentages by packet size, session size, and percentage of load to wan1 port.
