| Illinois Residents Want DSL Pronto
After the Northpoint fiasco and the otherwise bleak outlook for the remaining DLECs, a group of Illinois residents have tired of the year long battle that has been fought between SBC Communications and the Illinois Commerce Commission over the deployment of DSL remote terminals which are part of a project that SBC refers to as Project Pronto. SBC wants CLECs to have access to RT served customers via an ATM connection in the central office where as the ICC wants the CLECs to have physical access to the RT. A petition has been started asking the ICC to put an end to this battle and let Illinois citizens have the option of having DSL service before the end of the decade. |

|  If you are in Illinois and all of you can get is IDSL, or you had IDSL and lost it because of Northpoint or are just too far away from the CO to get anything, this is of the utmost importance to you! Project Pronto is the only alternative for many people in Illinois to get affordable DSL service from a stable provider (while I'm not in love with Ameritech, at least I know they won't be going out of business soon). Besides, CLECs will have access to the terminals so if you really hate Ameritech, you will have the option to use a competitive provider. The ICC really have their heads up in some dark place on this one and need a sense of direction. Please sign this petition! Thanks.

Dream on. Ameritech/SBC came kicking and screaming into the DSL game and is now licking its chops over the NorthPoint bankruptcy with Rythms and Covad next up. I know its new technology, but check out Sprint Broadband Direct as the only real competition besides cable modem. This will be the future here in IL |

I don't know if it is the future. I just switched to InfoRamp (Focal) for a little bit more per month. I am getting 1.5/512. They knew that a lot of customers are left scrambling for service, what other than to offer great service IMMEDIATELY (ok, ok 12 business days) to people who are already in the market but don't have a supply.
Spring Broadband only works if you have a clear line of sight either south or north pointing to the Sears Tower. People like myself who have a nice east view of Lake Michigan from my condo building can't get this ever. I can't say this is the answer to everyone's needs. |

Have you read the complaints in the SBBD forum??? SBBD is nice in Chicago right now because it is barely a month old here, and not many ppl are on...... You do realize this is dependent on your line of sight with the Sears Tower also? Two friends of mine, IN THE CITY, tried to get SBBD, and one was told that buildings are blocking his line of site, and the other was told he needed a 30 FOOT (yes 30 FOOT) pole put on his roof to mount the pizza box antenna on.... Obviously, the first was out of luck, and the second declined.
After being with Northpoint for 8 nice mos, through PSN.net and DSLi.com, I am finally with my ILEC, Ameritech. Some DSL, even ADSL, is better than nothing, and it only took them 3 weeks to get me up and running. At least I know, Ameritech will still be here, even with Rhythms burns through their cash later this year, and Covad in late 2002.

Most people are within the distance to get DSL in our town. We were the last ones to get cable tv. Now we'll be the last ones to get DSL too. Me personally, i'm tired of waiting, and waiting, and waiting. I think it's AT&T's fault that they cut NP's communications. They should've waited, then gave us someone else. Or maybe a temporary DSL connection until we got a good one. I was going to make it with NP. Now, DSLi is lying to me, i'm 14,518 Ft, from my CO, and DSLi is saying the only thing available to me is business grade at $139 a month! Well, OOL (Optimum Online by Cablevision) is wiring our town for internet which will be ready guaranteed by November 2001. Which kind of sucks but AT LEAST I WILL HAVE HIGH SPEED INTERNET. As for Illinois, I don't know what went on, but there's lots of crap happening here too. Well LOTS OF LUCK TO EVERYONE DURING THIS HIGH-SPEED INTERNET BATTLE! -Shawn-

"In December 1999, the fcc issued an order that required ILEC's such as ameritech illinois, to "line share", or allow compeditors to provide data services over the same local loop that the ILEC uses to provide voice service" The FCC, ICC and other state commissions rejected the narrow view, argued by Ameritech Illinois and other ILECs, that line sharing should only apply to communities that are served by all-copper local loops, and not to communities that are served by a combination of fiver and copper facilities. Instead, the FCC and the ICC held that all ILECs are required to offer line sharing over all facilities. Indeed, the DSL infrastructure that Mr. Whitacre refers to is composed of a combination of fiber and copper facilites. Thus, to accept Mr. Whitacre's position would effectively eliminate Ameritech-Illinois' obligation to line share. It is clear that the ICC's decision is consistent with the act, with FCC precedent, and with the rulings of other states. The fact that Mr. Whitacre's letter whilly fails to address the content of these rulings undermises his positions entirely."
This is not just the ICC, its also the FCC. Both, don't just blame the ICC.

As quoted above, the Whitacre letter states "Those costomers cannot now and may never, have access to DSL service" As we all know, the competitiveness of a market can be easly be measured by the ability of any one player to unilaterally control the supply of a good. Mr Whitacre's statement is clear: Ameritech Illinois controls the market so completely that it can determine if more than a million customers in Illinois will have access to broadband services. If the market were competitive, SBC/Ameritech would not be able to unilaterally halt the deployment of DSL infrastructure and deny these customers advanced telephone services"

Mr. Whitacre's suggestion that project pronto is being deployed solely to support data services is dangerously misleading. Both traditional voice-grade telephone service and data servce wil be provided over Project Pronto. Allowing ameritech to circumvent its current obligations to provide local loops to CLECs for voice service provision, under the auspices of a local loop upgrade initative, could be destructive to competition. If at any time in the future SBC/Ameritech decided to make its current antiquated loop infrastructure unavailale to CLECs (i.e., remove it from service), competitors would be left without local loop facilities over which to provide voice and/or data"
This is not only about dsl, its also about other carriers.
DSL is not a right, if you want high speed that bad enough to complain about it, get a T-1 line for gosh sakes. I am sure they will provide that to you right away, considering they make a huge profit off of it.
p.s. Earthlink Cable modem service is coming soon in At&t area's. They agreed without any problems to letting other carriers get into thier network, as long as they give them some time...... |
