[Project Hope] Some help from the members

We are so close now too going live that it's starting to get exciting.

Our current situation is, that we will be cutting a check or
use Pay Pal to get the money too each host.
(Because of New Eggs policy on ordering parts).
After they receive the money, they will go ahead
and order the parts then start building the blades.

I come today asking for some help in used parts.
We currently don't need many things.
And it really is mainly an old HDD and a Hub.

The HDD's need to be a minimum of 2 Gigs and up.
Also a really large or expensive HDD is not a must for us since
all it will have on it is the projects and the operating system.

I'll go ahead and give a break down of the hosts that need parts.
And you can directly contact them on shipping it to them.

I'll ask for this post to become a sticky.
And we can probably go ahead and use this post to list when the member gets the parts,
so this way will know and have all the hosts covered.
If shipping is a concern please get with
Kristi a.k.a simplykristi See Profile and we will see if we can cover that from
our total money collected for this project.

With that said I'll list the members that need parts.

Jeff- a.k.a JMartin See Profile 2 HDD's
Bruce- a.k.a babacher See Profile 2 HDD's
Brian- a.k.a Dersgniw See Profile 2 HDD's and a Hub.

In the past there where many members that where willing to donate parts,
and now is your chance

I'm hoping that after everything is initially set up and we have the crunchers going.
We could look into building more blades from spare parts.

But our first step will be to set up everything and get the 4 hosts crunching.

Thanks in advance,
Slava

I found an old Maxtor 8.4 GB drive in my closet. I quit using it the second time it crapped out on me, but with a low-level format, and with as little drive activity as it will get, it would probably work just fine.

I do have another thought though: what about CD drives? Each host will need at least one drive to connect to the crunchers to load the operating systems. Or had you all planned to put the drives into your main systems to load, and then swap them out? Or perhaps map the CD drive of another machine and load the OS over the network?

Bruce, I'm glad you brought that up. I've been scrounging around for a CD drive, and have found a couple.

My plan is to connect a CD drive to the blade I'm loading the o/s on. Make sure it reboots with all drivers, etc. then the make a Ghost image onto a mapped drive elsewhere on the network.

Periodically, I'll have a scheduled job copy the appropriate project directory, UD in my case, to a backup share on the network. Maybe I'm too up-tight about down time and lost work due to discipline at work, but that's my plan.

I'm open for comments and suggestions.

I have two hard drives and they're available as soon as I can scrub them clean. They were/are in excellent condition. I only removed them because they were replaced with larger drives.

Maxtor 8.4 Gig
Quantum Fireball 4.3 Gig

Also I have a Linksys 4 port Hub somewhere around here.

?

Do we have any sort of protocol for "claiming" what is offered up here?

Do we need CD-roms?

Bruce I was hoping this could be a place where users contact the hosts with what they needed.

After the contact was made and the host received what they needed they
could come back here and just check in.

Do you believe that the initial contact and promise of a member donating
a part to the host should also be up on this post?

This way others can see which items have been promised to each host, and
all the hosts can be taken cared of.
Will not have one host with 5 HDD's, will another only has 1.
Or will instant messages individually to the hosts work?

I guess when we looked at all the parts. I just assumed that we could always us our existing CD-ROMs.
But maybe this is not the case.

We also really never discussed CD ROMs which might be needed to load the OS.
Jeff made a really good post regarding this.
But is this something we need to look into?
Or can we get by without having each host have a CD Rom and use their existing ones?

Jason that is indubitably a good suggestion and something for us to look into.

But at the same token if we can cut back on costs, with having members and teammates donate old
and unused parts then we might be better off going that wrought.

When we first started looking into this project many members volunteered parts.
With posts both here and in the Team Discovery forum, I thought it would be wise for us to utilize all our recourses.
Also with the spare parts we might even be able to put a few blades together after we have the initial set up completed.
I think it's great that we can discus things regarding this project.

New things come up all the time that we didn't even think of or discus.
That's why I am sure, when all this gets finalized our team will have the best organized project.
After all, not every team starts off with 4 separate locations and 4 separate hosts to host a project like this

Re: [Project Hope] Some help from the members

My point about the protocol was, I'm reluctant to jump in and say "Hey Lillie (or Jnick)! Send it to me!" I don't know, it's just in my nature to give other people the first cut.

Regarding the CD drives, I think Jeff has a good idea, and I have an idea for expanding on it. I don't know what operating system Jeff has to load on his machines, but if it is the same as what someone else is using AND the other person has Ghost, Jeff could just make the Ghost image available for download on an FTP server (or mail a CD). Then the second person wouldn't need a CD drive at all.

I own two copies of NT4, so that's what I plan to load. I think Jeff is using something else, so his image wouldn't do me any good (not legally, anyway).

Perhaps someone can take what's offered here and put it in a list and organize who could send what to whom. Just a thought and it might make things easier.

I'll just rip the CDROM out of my PC at home temporarily for loading up the OS.

Like she said. Just let me know who it's going to and when you want it. You can either im me or email me the recipients address.

I have no qualms about who gets these things as long as they're used for Project Hope.

My biggest concern is packaging up these drives so they don't get damaged during shipping.

It's been close to a week now since I made this post.

Since then, Kristi has sent out our hosts the money for parts.
My curiosity got the best of me and I was wondering how our hosts where doing on parts.

If you still need something, please get back using this post.

Thank you, Slava

Oooops, I can't believe I missed this thread. I do have several small hard drives, ranging from about 4gb to 10gb. Whichever host is in need, give me a holler here via PM or email at hivolt@planetmadtv.com

I have one HD on the way, and one in my closet. If the old one I have turns out not to be useful, I'll request another one.

Other than that, I'm good to go!

Ok, I scrounged up a WD 2111MB and a Seagate 3227MB drive from one of my IT buddies junk piles. Funny how they always seem to have useful "junk piles"
Both spun up when we tested them and are available to whoever may still need them. Just let me know and they will be on their way.
They are on the way.
