I like how arstechnica.com boards have a frame with smilies and you write your text and press the one you like and it inserts the correct symbols into the text. Very user friendly.

I have to object. I prefer less trinkets and more substance in the information that is presented. The fluff, IMO, detracts from the conversation. Plus, I can only imagine how some users would abuse the ability to incorporate more smilies.
