Not sure if this is true.

IIRC, 802.11a,b, and g can run in several modes, and only one of them does the "equal access" thing. One slow user will certainly increase latency (because they'll be taking longer when they have the hotspot), but throughput for the faster points should not be affected.

Yes, it will increase latency, but throughout will be affected, at least from my experience. Being a recent graduate from high school, here's a case in point:

In the spring of '02, my local high school (Clarke Central) got a Cisco Aironet 350 Series Wireless Ethernet Bridge, and attempted to use it with their existing Compaq (now HP) N1000v laptops. My science teacher (Alexander Powell) had a cart chock-full of the above laptops (including the access point) wheeled into the classroom. Once the laptop was handed to me, I turned it on, and logged in.

Shortly after opening Internet Exploder, the laptop started to lose sync constantly. This laptop was, keep in mind, using Intel's Centrino mobile technology. As much as I struggled to make it resync (including rebooting the laptop a gazillion times), it wouldn't sync back up. Go figure.

They also recently switched to Dell, but they're only giving Dell laptops to the teachers that don't currently have laptops. Those that already have (Compaq) laptops have to suffer through the problems that they have, including students. Ouch. What a poor decision Clarke County made. They should have waited until they had the money to give all the teachers new laptops, not just teachers that didn't have them.

The sad thing is that they blamed me for it that day. Only the next day did they realize it wasn't my fault.

Because of this, I will never, ever invest in wireless technology. It is very evident from the above statement that 802.11x is not ready for mass adoption.

Intel Centrino was only made available this march, one year later than the timing your alleged story suggests...

I think that was a little bit harsh... But very funny

(I believe you WizKid. The story is plausible, and I've had many run-ins with inept administations...)
