| reply to JTRockville There is a big difference between paranoid, and prepared.

I'm glad I'm hiding behind a router so I don't have to see all the port 80 and 135 probes coming from those Comcast customers who don't think they need firewalls. |

| I don't get on the internet without a firewall configured... I run XP Pro(NT 5.1) which is a Server Operating System at the core, and I don't dare expose my computer to the 'net' without a properly configured firewall because of all the services.
I even installed, and configured a firewall on my fathers system so he's mostly protected without seeing one prompt from the application. Just because he isn't that smart about networking, and firewalls doesn't mean I have to leave him unprotected. -- My hourly rates: $25 per hour. $35 per hour if you want to watch. $45 per hour if you want to help. $75 per hour if you tried to fix it, and failed. 1.) Yes the people in this forum are tin-foil hat wearing paranoids.
2.) WTF? No firewall!! Come on I'm not a paranoid person, but my routers and firewalls at home, home office and work get hammered on all day long by idiots that think that they don't need a firewall. -- -- uber1337 stryc9's weblog |

I agree, it's these idiots that get their systems exploited and port scan us all day. |

ROFL...That just about says it all.. ROFL...
Besides, I think the general public seems to have that "Comcast" type of thinking when they are newbies.. My nephew NEVER cared., until Heee Heee Heee! (yes, I'm gloating).. he had Bugbear, 3 trojans, and TONS of Spyware on his computer that almost made him throw the machine away.. (Deep down I think he was looking for an excuse to hit on his mother for a new 'puter...).. and anyways, now he's a security "freak"..LOL Got KAv, Zapro., Spybot, etc... |

Its a probe if its blocked by your firewall, but we don't know if its an actual exploit until its too late -- My hourly rates: $25 per hour. $35 per hour if you want to watch. $45 per hour if you want to help. $75 per hour if you tried to fix it, and failed. |

Lol, with the dcom exploit even the 6 month old girl next door can break into a computer.
I could give more arguments, but like jdong, I also have given up hope.(This post contradicts that, but hacking a puter has gotten _really_ easy now). |

| reply to JTRockville oh dear god...
you people ARE paranoid.
I sit in the DMZ on my router and I've not ONCE gotten a single trojan or anything else of that sort. I keep my system up-to-date and have more than my fair share of computer knowledge. I have AVG installed and scan files that I download from un-trusted locations.
The only virii I've had to get rid of are ones that come from e-mails that my parents open on their own computers... my system is perfectly fine.
and as someone just said in IRC.. I tend to agree with him...
[12:57:19] firewalls are for morons.
Firewalls in a home setting are completely pointless.. unless you ARE a moron who likes to open up executables in their Outlook Express inbox... or something of the sort...
come port scan me! what you're going to find is a box that has strong passwords on its administrator accounts and doesn't have to forward ports for all the apps that I use on a daily basis. -- |Fj33r.com| |TIHM| |DSLR IRC| |LJ| |Comedy Gold| |
