Re: Anybody back online in Chicago ?

See my single post about Ameritech DSL further down....

Better than nothing... I'm surprised , that in a big city like Chicago, no one had any questions, oh well...

Guess they all got moved to Covad or Rhythms....

Actually, I posted a title in the other northpoint discussion group here. As far as I know, no one here in town got moved anywhere, and we're all stuck with that 90-120 day wait (despite the fact that my DSLAM connection turned on again a week and a half ago or so). I can't get ameritech because I'm moving in 2 months, and they said it would take at least 6 weeks to get me transferred over (plus, after losing $250 to psn.net and their hardware "rebate" I don't have the cash to afford a new router).

xris, the router isn't required, just makes PPPoE more of a true "always on" connection..

Ameritech is averaging 3 weeks to install..... Any many people are getting the self-install kits, and taking LESS time.

Goodluck...if you decide to learn more, join us at the Ameritech forum, nicknamed Ameritech "Funhouse". At least we have *several* Ameritech Techs there daily to help with orders, status, processing, and updates...

If it wasn't for them, I would not have DSL at all as the front office said I was too far and they would not install it, LOL....

Re: Router not required?!

Um, how am I supposed to connect the dsl line to my computer without the router?! It's not like I can just plug my rj45 plug straight into the rj11 phone jack. Or are you thinking of a different kind of router? I'm talking about the piece of hardware that routes between the DSL and ethernet (sometimes incorrectly called a "modem").

xris,

They give you an adsl modem....... The router was an extra piece of hardware I purchased for other features.

I'm not talking about ADSL hardware. a modem is specifically a digital->analog thing (dsl is by nature digital->digital). Anyway, the dsl "modem" is also called a "router" (it's definitely not a modem), or a "switch" or a "gateway" (I forget the proper terminology, though I think that a switch is the hardware used to connect two different kinds of network hardware together). Regardless, what I have is not ADSL, it's an SDSL router with integrated 4 port hub. Or it's the SDSL "gateway" that telocity gave me. and I NEED one of them to connect. I get the same function as your router from my linux box, but I still need a dsl router to connect my ethernet network to the dsl line. Well, I would if there was a DSL network to connect to.

xris? wtf are you talking about??? My dsl modem IS NOT a router! Yes, some modems are router/modem combos all in one, but many are NOT.

I have an ADSL modem, which is really an ethernet bridge, and a router which handles 1) hardware firewall, 2) PPPoE needs and 3) hubbing multiple PCs. Now, the MODEM that Ameritech gives you, is just that, an ADSL modem, without the other (3) features I mentioned above. It can work BY ITSELF with PPPoE software, but I chose not to use it that way.

Lately , there has been some discussion on its other capabilities with a firmware upgrade, but that is still being bantered about.

Also, I WAS NOT asking you what you have, but telling you what you WOULD GET should you sign up for Ameritech. I had SDSL for 8 months, so I know about SDSL modems (ethernet bridges) as I had TWO of those also!

I think you are confused.....goodluck!
