| Poll: RoadRunner Xtreme
I thought it would be interesting to see what people would think about upgrading to RR Xtreme if and when it became available to you.
For the purposes of this poll, forget for a minute that there would be any caps imposed on any level of service as far as the amount of data you can transfer. This poll is strictly about price, and how many people would be willing to pay for more speed.
| If RR were to announce a 3000/512k level of service in your area today would you |

| | | stay with your existing service and not even consider it | 87 (56.8%) | | sign up ONLY if it was priced no higher than 79 per month | 46 (30%) | | undecided | 12 (7.8%) | | sign up if it was priced no higher than 89 per month | 4 (2.6%) | | sign up if it was priced no higher than 99 per month | 4 (2.6%) | 153 participants. results as pie chart in flash |
When voting, try not to judge it by what you'd LIKE to see as far as price, but by what you feel would be the limit where you'd definately draw the line if it were at that price level.
Happy voting. -- The life you help save just might be your own Team Discovery |

| reply to Rick I doubt I would switch considering the speed increase is 1.5 of what I have now and they want to charge 1.75 to 2 times the amount I am paying now. Now if they offered 3000/768 or 3000/1000 for $79 or $89 I might go for it. -- 3 out of 4 people make up 75% of the population. |

| reply to Rick The increase is minimal for nearly double the price. There is no way I would go for that. Quite happy with my current 2000/384 for $45.
On a side note, I would like to say that excluding things like download/upload data caps and other features/restrictions is a silly way to base a poll. Personally, I look at what I am being offered, the total package.... the good and the bad, and decide if the value is worth the money. It is like someone saying "I got $20 hard drives for sale". The problem is they are only 2GB, spin at 1000rpm and have no warranty.... There is no value for the money there. -- No man's life, liberty or fortune is safe while our legislature is in session.--- Benjamin Franklin |

| reply to Rick Well since I just switched over to DSL at 3000 kbps down and 128 up...(I did have RR up until last Friday) I am very happy with what I have now. And there are rumors that the upload speed may be increased soon. I am testing at 85% of the 3000 kbps cap here. And I am paying $39.95 a month for this service. | reply to Rick the existing service has deteriorated to a point that paying more isn't worth the hassle. if they can't make 2000/384 work for me there's no hoping for higher speeds just cause i'd be willing to pay more. $45 is plenty to spend on this sub-par offering aol calls broadband. -- the USA is a weapon of mass destruction. |

Like I have posted a numerous amount of times.I would kill to have RR extreme package.I had 2100/384 for around $50 a month.I need more upload so I got the smaller business class package at 512/512 for $111.00 a month. The upload rules but my download went to crap.So hell yes I want to pay less and get more download to go with my upload. |

| reply to Rick I wouldn't switch. Its not worth $30 extra to me to get 1 Mbit/s more download, and 128 kbit/s more upload.
There is nothing I could do MORE with the higher speed, as there aren't much highspeed services to begin with. 99% of all Audio and Video streams found on the web can easily be vieuwed / listened to within 2 Mbit/s, even if you have more computers. I was able to view a 1.3 Mbit/s videostream from a university AND watch a 500 kbit/s dutch news stream on the other computer without any trouble.
A big download may come in 10 minutes faster then it would come in with 2 Mbit/s, but is that really worth the money?
The upload difference beteen 384 kbit/s and 512 kbit/s is marginal. So now you can upload at 55 kbyte/s instead of 40 kbyte/s. Only if you do a lot of fileswapping (P2P, posting on usenet) it may come in handy. The only reason I would use it for is for a 300 kbit/s videostream to my parents who live in Europe, so a little more upload would be nice....
IMHO it is too little of a change to justify a price increase of $30. If it was 4 Mbit/s down and 1 Mbit/s up I maybe would consider it, but only because of the upload. I would probably pay $79 for 2 Mbit/s down and 1 Mbit/s up, and since WorldCom offers 1.5 Mbit/s download/768 kbit/s upload DSL lines for 50 bucks I may even switch to that.
I'm sticking with the current normal subscription. I simply do not download enough to justify downloading at 380 kbye/s instead of 240 kbyte/s. Not a very big difference, and you probably hardly notice it with downloads under 100 megs. -- »www.deanforamerica.com - You have the power to make a change! Support Howard Dean 2004 |

I excluded data caps from the poll for 3 reasons. First, I ran a poll not that long ago after the Xtreme testing program was announced that dealt specifically with that issue. This poll is meant to specifically target the level of interest in the program simply from the viewpoint of speeds at the various price points RR selected for each test market.
Secondly, As others noted in a previous thread, RR appears to have decided to do away with the 15GB cap and go with a 40GB cap instead for the basic program. Based on my before mentioned data cap poll..that number seems much more realistic for most users and if people did upgrade to Xtreme, it would be moreso for the speeds vs. having to because they're exceeding the data caps.
And lastly, as I mentioned in the initial thread that was started at the time the Xtreme testing program was announced, I thought that RR was making a big mistake in instituting any data caps at all. The single biggest factor in the growth of the internet over the last few years was when unlimited access for one price came along and RR instituting a policy like this was really a dumb move IMO. It was especially that if Earthlink decided not to follow suit because who in their right mind would stay with RR when they could get unlimited access with no caps for even less money? I think RR started to quickly find that out in their test..and hence why that 15GB # was raised almost 3 fold. My main point in making my comments though was that I thought it was a dumb move, because they really didn't have to institute data caps at all. I think enough people would have signed up for xtreme if it was priced right..and delivered these kinds of speeds to have more than enough made up the difference of what RR's concerns were as far as people using excessive amounts of bandwidth. Instead of their presenting something that really turned out to be a negative..could have been turned into something very positive..and offered people more choice. I think that people who use the net to download and upload mid double digit GB's of data on a regular monthly basis would be happy to do it even faster...and if the price was right..would be happy to pay for that service on their own. And, in the process..i think many people who are considered more along the lines of average users would go along with that program as well.
I think RR seriously underestimates how popular this program would be if they rolled it out nationwide. Even with just the sampling in my poll..38% of users say they would upgrade to it..with another 7% undecided. I wanted to leave the data equation out of the poll to strictly see those results..based on the program itself, at the various price points.
What I would say is RR could easily roll out this program..do away with ALL the data caps..price it at 79.95 per month...and make everyone..including themselves very happy in the process.
What their marketing people really should have done first was to simply test how xtreme sold in the 3 markets they tested it in...and see if on it's own..it accomplished what they were trying to achieve. I think it would have. And they could have saved themselves some headaches..and not have lost customers to Earthlink in the process.

| reply to Rick Considering how I get 3.5mbit down 800kbit up DSL in Montreal for 49.99$ a month canadian (That's 35.95$ US per month), I think that RoadRunner is absolutely insane to charge 110$ Canadian per month for a SLOWER service!
