Technique! Week 5

Welcome to Technique! Week 5. Week 4 is officially closed for new photos. Special thanks to Edit This See Profile for sharing his imaging technique for editing people into photographs. That was a lot of fun to learn!

The goal of this thread is for one of the members of the forum to share a photographic technique with the rest of the forum. Then we can all practice this technique & upload our results. The technique doesn't have to be limited to digital editing. It can be related to other things as well, like exposure, depth-of-field, etc. A good example of a technique thread can be found here.

Who has a technique they'd like to share with the forum?

Technique: Isolate the subject then change the background:

Step 1) Select the subject of the image with whatever method you feel comfortable with. I use the Quick Mask mode in Photoshop.

Step 2 Invert the selection.

Step 3) Apply a filter the the inverted selection.
Examples would be a Gaussian blur set a 2.0.
Any artistic filter or brush stroke filter.
A radial blur produces some great effect.
Desaturate to turn the entire image black and white except for the subject.
Let your imagination run wild.

Hi Hullodare,

I like the technique. I think I prefer the radial blur. One question, Does your photoshop have a Blur/Sharpen Tool? It is not a filter. Also have you tried the Smudge Tool. Here is one that I posted to the Gallery using the Smudge Tool to the backround.

Yes. It does have the blur/sharpen tool. I like what you did with that car. It looks great. As I said....let your imagination run wild. Nice work bluwing.

I love that pic Fritty!

Here is my attempt..

Hullodare; what/how does the quickmask work?

I did a duplicate layer, then smartlasso'd out the subject, then applied the blur.. is this the 'long way' ?
