| [Info] Windows Update Troubleshooting
It seems as if we have a huge onslaught of WU issues since the release of the MSBLASTER worm and Microsofts subsequent change of providers for the updates themselves. Although I don't want to diminish the individual importance of each member posting a problem, I believe it would be more useful if we kept it all in one big common thread.
This solves two problems-•It keeps as many problem\solutions together as possible until the word has gotten out and either Microsoft or users fix it.•It allows more time on the first two - three pages of the forum (depending on your settings) for all the other requests for technical assistance that appear here daily. So, I'm going through the past four days of similar posts and will lock each one. If you are one of those whose thread is closed, then please add to this one with the symptoms you are experiencing. If you were fortunate enough to find the solution then please provide it in your post. Afterwards, drop me an IM and within 48 hours I will go back and unlock each thread I closed (to allow them time to drop off).
BTW, everyone joining in should probably check the Windows Update Troubleshooter first to see if their particular error message is addressed in the document.
Also, one nasty by-product -- it is an open, stickied thread. Depending on how long this lasts, it shouldn't be up more than a couple weeks. I don't want to hear any pissin'a and moanin' about it.
Thanks everyone for your contributions. Maybe when it's all said and done we can convince someone to write a meaningful FAQ for posterity. -- M -- FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. It comes bundled with the software. |

| reply to MSeng Well that's nice none of the listed fixes is for my problem and you still lock my thread. I appreciate your work here at DSLR but some times I feel like I'm dealing with MS directly. That means NO help or any chance for help. Now I have the same problem on both my XP PC's. I did the 823980 update back when It came out. Today I was on my laptop and said lets do a update. First I got "Thank you for your interest in Windows but you need to be running Windows to use the update site" or something like that. Reboot and got to the update site and DL 823980, then to check I went back to the site and it didn't show up so I thought it was OK. Later in the day I did my desktop and the same file keeps showing up. Started the laptop and now I have the same file on the laptop showing up as needed and I have installed it. -- Are You Ready--Stand By BEEP ******** |

I didn't see anything in the Windows Update Troubleshooter, so I'll ask this in here. I go to Microsoft's home page and click the Windows update link and it takes me to this page. Just wondering if anyone here is seeing the same thing. if so how did you fix it, if you fixed it? Thanks in advance. -- "Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind. | reply to MSeng I've been digging in the microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup -- quite a few are having problems similar to what we've been seeing.
FWIW, here are a few comments coming from the newsgroup --
Subject: What's up with the WindowsUpdate site?
I went to »windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I tried from several different computers, and all I got was the following:
Thank you for your interest in Windows Update
Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.
The latest version of Windows Update is available on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP, and the Windows Server 2003 family.
I got the same thing, but when I hit refresh, It got me there. It happened twice, and never again. Subject: Update hangs at the install step...
For about 4-5 days, I scan for updates, windows recommends a couple (including the 2 recent critical updates), I select them to install, hit "ACCEPT" to the license agreement - then the install progress box pops up and nothing EVER happens. What should I do? I need those critical updates.
There seems to be a temporary issue with some COX ISP subscribers being unable to access the Windows Update web site. Microsoft is working with COX in an effort to resolve the problem.
Read this snip for a temporary workaround:
"Hello all - I was having problems yesterday and tried replacing the cab file, entering trusted sites, etc, but nothing seemed to work. Apparently, the windowsupdate site IP address was changed by Microsoft and several ISPs (including COX) haven't picked up the new IP address from the DNS yet.
Add the following line to your hosts file (located in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc):
208.172.158.234 download.windowsupdate.com
This solved the problem for me and I am able to successfully update on all my computers.
Thanks to Tom (Wart) for posting the info. Hopefully it will be the solution for some people...."
Problems Using Internet Explorer with Incorrect Hosts File »support.microsoft.com/default.as···S;219843
That is not a solution, only a temporary workaround. The IP addresses associated with Windows Update change frequently, therefore Cox users will again find themselves unable to download in the future.
Microsoft is recommending users using this workaround remove the added Host entries immediately after updating and call their ISP. Subject: Lucy (MS) or any other MS professional (another 0x800A138F)
Hi Lucy - yes I'm another with the error message 0x800A138F and would like help. I've read replies to others in similar plight and have tried the following without success:
1) Deleted all temporary internet files 2) Deleted every entry from 'Restricted Sites' 3) Added misc download.windowsupdate.com entries to my 'Trusted Sites' 4) Start/Run regsvr32 wintrust.dll 5) Logged onto different ISP to see if it was a problem with my regular ISP
None of these worked. I notice in other replies you have given, you have asked for the entries from the Windows Update.Log to be posted
I have read other suggestions involving deleting files from the Windows Update directory and another of inserting a line in the Hosts file - but really am at the point where I would appreciate some professional advice.
Hi Ross,
What operating system are you running? If applicable try the suggestion listed in the Windows Update Troubleshooter. »v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Another possible solution is to remove the Windows Update ActiveX controls. Here's the knowledge Base article.

Let us know the outcome.
Thank you, Lucy Eby [MSFT] Subject: REPOST BY REQUEST: FIX for 0x800A138F error
Hello Everyone:
I just wanted to share a solution if you are experiencing an error with Windows Update (error 0x800A138F) over the past 24 hours since Microsoft brought more "windows update" capacity online because of the Blaster Worm, WORM_MSBLAST.xxxx -- which is affecting the NT-based Operating Systems: (NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP / 2003).
It appears that Microsoft has taken on Akamai for additional bandwidth and is exclusively using HTTPS (SSL) for the downloading of the update catalog to your machine(s).
If you experience error #0x800A138F when "Scanning for Updates" and Windows Update appears to freeze while looking for them... It is most likely due to your machine being blocked from connecting via SSL to Akamai. You can confirm this by looking at the file, "Windows Update.log" in your %windir% (i.e. "c:\winnt\") folder. If it contains a line like the following, this must be your problem:
2003-08-16 19:43:04 23:43:04 Error IUENGINE Querying software update catalog from »https://a248.e.akamai.net/v4.windowsupda···fest.asp (Error 0x800C0005)
Try pasting the previous URL into the browser of the machine on which you are having trouble with Windows Update. If you get an XML response of any kind such as following:
{catalog} {provide} {/catalog}
Then you are probably experiencing a different problem, BUT if you CANNOT connect to this URL, check to see if you have any third party firewall products either on your machine and/or your gateways/proxies (such as ISA Server) on whether or not you have access to SSL/HTTPS (port 443) for outbound connections.
If you are running Windows Update on a Microsoft ISA Server and are receiving this error, you need to enable the ISA server itself to have access to outbound SSL/HTTPS connections. To do this, create an outbound TCP packet filter on port 443 (Local Port Dynamic, Remote Port Fixed on 443) using the following instructions:
1. From within the ISA Management MMC console, drill-down to "IP Packet Filters": [Console Root] - Servers and Arrays - [ISA Computer name] - Access Policy -IP Packet Filters
2. Right-click on IP Packet Filters, point to New and then click Filter. 3. Follow the onscreen instructions using the following parameters: - IP packet filter name: ISA Outbound HTTPS - Filter Mode: Allow Packet Transmission - Filter Type: Custom - Filter Settings: IP Protocol: TCP Direction: Outbound Local port: Dynamic Remote port: Fixed port / 443 - Local Computer: Default IP addresses for each external interface ... - Remote Computers: Allow remote computers
I hope this was of assistance to you, please let me know if you have further questions or just drop a line and let me know how you made out! Subject: WU Probs - SUGGESTIONS FOR POSTING
Just a suggestion, but I think this would all be a lot more constructive if people with this problem would include the following info......
How far does your windows update get? What error message do you then get (if any)? What is the error message in Windows Update.log (search for it) What is your OS? Who is your ISP? What anti-virus / firewall setups do you have? If you open the MSDOS Prompt and type 'ping download.windowsupdate.com' (without the quotes) do you
get an answer or an error? Does modifying the HOSTS file (see prior posts) work for you?
I think this is nearly all a DNS resolution problem on the internet in response to changes made by MS and private ISPs because of the blaster worm and will likely all be resolved soon. The question is: when?
In the meantime, if Windows Update can scan for updates and give you a list, write them all down and search microsoft's site for them and apply them manually.

The Windows Update site shows two Critical Updates, 811493 and 833980 which I downloaded, installed then rebooted. I then went back to the Update site and found those same two critical updates again!!! So, I went through the process again and when I returned to the Update site those same two updates were there!!! I looked at two MS Knowledge Base articles:

I performed the action suggested in both articles but the issue was not resolved.

-------------------------------------------------------- Fixing Windows Update
Tool: Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer
The best way to fix Windows Update so that it behaves as normal is effectively to uninstall all its components from your machine and allow it to reinstall. You can do this by following all of the procedures below in sequence:
1. Reboot your PC and don't open Windows Update.
2. Go to Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options and click on the Delete Cookies and Delete Files (tick 'Delete all offline content') buttons. Click OK to finish and close Internet Explorer.
3. Open Windows Explorer, and go to your Windows Update folder, typically C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate. Delete the folder and all subfolders and contents.
4. Still in Windows Explorer, go to your Windows Update Temporary folder, typically C:\WUTemp. Delete the folder and all subfolders and contents. Note that you can delete this folder any time in the future after a Windows Update session and a reboot. Close Windows Explorer.
5. Click on Start>Run and type "REGSVR32 IUCTL.DLL /U" (without quotes) and click OK. Click OK again when done.
6. Go to Start>Search, select All Files and Folders and type in "IUCTL.DLL" (without quotes) in the top search box, then Press ENTER. Delete every instance of this file found highlight the files in the right pane and press DEL.
7. Repeat step 6 for "IUENGINE.DLL" (without quotes) and delete all entries found again.
8. Reboot your PC. Open Windows Update and Windows will redownload the Windows Update software and everything should be fine from there.
Note if your icon doesn't work for accessing Windows Update, use this link.»https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/e···ault.asp The difference is this link is a secure (HTTPS, not HTTP) website link. Add it to your Favorites if other methods of access don't work.
Finally, With support timing out on old windows OS's, it might be a good idea for those who wish to do so to download ALL the critical and fixes for their OS. Possibly saving them to a CD in case they ever have to re-install.
The following site, if I recall correctly, has those files. I myself have never downloaded them, as I only have XP at the momment.
Please let us [this forum] know if this is a viable option. Each OS should have the critical hotfixes needed.

By chance do you use Spyblocker ? The reason I ask is because they put out a New Spyblocker.exe file and it's supposed to address this issue. What I personally found the new file did was remove the a248.e.akamai.net entry from the host file that Spyblocker itself creates.

| reply to MSeng Re: Updating NVidia drivers
Click Start -> Run, type: gpedit.msc -> click OK |
This pertains to updating NVidia video drivers in XP. Particularly if the video card and/or drivers are removed, and then XP rebooted. Which is how NVidia recommends updating their drivers, not by installing newer drivers over older ones and visa versa.
After removing the drivers and rebooting, XP will automatically download the 44.03 drivers from the Windows update site. Here's an explanation as to why MS pushed the 44.03 detonators to a critical update: »groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&l···0phx.gbl
Since these drivers are WHQL, XP will search Windows update, download, and install them because of the system group policy and their availability on Windows Update.
The user must either let XP download and install the 44.03 drivers, then manually update to the newer or older drivers. Which is what NVidia recommends not to do.
The preferred method is to change the driver search locations in the Group Policy editor to prohibit XP from searching and using Windows Update drivers. (See gpedit.msc.jpg) Upon reboot, XP will then prompt the user to search for drivers. If the drivers were extracted from the NVidia driver exe, simply point XP to that location for the drivers. Alternatively, the user can choose not to search for drivers and then run the NVidia driver update exe. (Example: Start -> Run -> Browse for 45.23_win2kxp_english_whql.exe -> OK)

| reply to MSeng Ok, I haven't seen anybody else with this one. So I still need a solution.
This is what the MS help page says.
"When you try to install a package from the Windows Update Web site you receive a message stating that the software has not passed Windows logo testing and will not be installed..
Resolutions:
Suggestion 1 ========== This problem can occur if the hotfix installer was referencing: C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log and the file was corrupt. Either renaming C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log or renaming the entire C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder will allow the hotfix install to complete normally.
I don't exactly understand this. I renamed those folders, to the same name. Right? If not, what am I supposed to name it to?
Suggestion 2 ============ Register the following system files.
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run." 2. Type "regsvr32 licdll.dll" (without quotes). 3. Click "OK." 4. Type "regsvr32 regwizc.dll" (without quotes). 5. CLick "OK."
Did this, everything said ok, but it still doesn't work
Suggestion 3 ============ This problem can also occur if the Cryptographic Services have been disabled. To resolve this problem: 1. Click "Start," and then click "Run." 2. Type "Services.msc" (without quotes). 3. Double-click "Cryptographic Services." If the service has been disabled, enable it. 4. Attempt to download and install Windows Updates again, and then check to see if the problem is resolved.
This was set to automatic as it should be
Suggestion 4 ============ The symptom can occur if the "Microsoft Root Authority" certificate or the "NOLIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc." certificate under Trusted Root Certification Authorities has been removed. On another computer that has the Microsoft Root Authority certificate installed, do the following: 1. Open Internet Explorer 2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options." 3. Click "Contents." 4. Click "Certificates." 5. Click "Trusted Root Certification Authorities." 6. Scroll down until you locate Microsoft Root Authority certificate. 7. Click "Export." 8. Follow the prompts to export the certificate to "DER encoded Binary x.509(.CER)file." On the computer that cannot install the update, follow the steps to import the certificate you saved.
I only have one computer, can't do this one.
So what am I supposed to do? It also gives me the not logo tested message with drivers to, not just updates.
I only need two patches right now. But eventually I would like this to work before it causes a problem for me.
Any suggestions? |
