| Modem power level??
My power level on my SB4100 has been at -7 to -9dBmV for a long time now although it used to be at 0 to -2 but that was about a year ago. Just now, the modem activity light went solid orange (usually it blinks orange furiously all the time). At the same time, the online green light started blinking and my connection went dead. It came back in about 3 or 4 minutes. This is the time when Oceanic does maintenance so when it came back, I checked the status page local and national but no maintenance was scheduled for my area.
I then went to the modem's web page and I now have a downstream power level of 0! I waited a couple of minutes, checked again and this time it was -1. Checked a third time and it was back to 0. The other levels including the upstream power level have not changed at all! What could have caused this large, sudden change (earlier today it was at a -8)? I had asked a field tech about it several months ago when he was out because I was getting poor speed and he told me that there wasn't anything he could do about it being at -8 or -9 instead of the 0 it was at a year ago when the speed was great. So, if he couldn't do anything, what caused it to change so drastically tonite? Could there be something wrong with the modem and it isn't reporting properly?

| First off, your modem levels are fine. -5 to +5 is outstanding. +15 to -15 is in range. I usually run -7. My upstream is usually 49 to 54. Over 58 will disconnect you. Surfboard modems are very forgiving of fluctuating power levels. Secondly, the solid or rapid flashing of the orange light is ARP traffic on your node. It is normal. I don't believe that has anything to do with your connection problem. -- Using Cox Business Services (Rock "N" Roll) |

I know that the rapid flashing of the activity light is ARP traffic since Code Red, however this seems to be blinking differently than in the past plus, since Code Red, I have never seen the light go solid orange that I recall ...it is always blinking.
I don't know if this is a connection problem or a modem going bad or both! I wanted to know how could the downstream power level suddenly change so drastically. RR field techs have told me that this is impossible. Can the ISP do something at their end to change the downstream power level so much? Or is this possibly a case of the modem no longer correctly reporting the downstream power level because it's starting to malfunction? I know the downstream power level is affected by the weather, but this was a large change not what you might see with a little cooler weather at night. Plus, the upstream level has not changed at all...how is that possible with such a large downstream level change?
Hmmmm....the modem just went off line as I type this. It is having trouble getting back on also. It has spontaneously rebooted about once a day for the last two weeks and it shouldn't be doing that. -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny." -7 to 15 would be a drastic change |

| reply to Mele20 It shouldn't be sponteously rebooting. For example my Toshiba has been up for 33 days without a reboot My power level is -0.9 dBmV. I would try looking at logs and see what is going on. -- Forum Posts: 1000 |
