Adelphia Blocking Pings

I just received an email from Adelphia that stated they are blocking pings.

EDIT: I had posted the message, but Hob has a web link posted to what amounts to the same message. The thread is »Slow Speeds? Bad Connection? READ THIS.

Re: Adelphia Blocking Pings

Yes... exactly what they said. Like others have said recently (in the past couple days), Adelphia's network and systems are getting flooded by pings and requests. It is a good thing in my opinion that they are doing this. In the end it will help stabilize the network.

Unfortunately, these viruses have impacted the Adelphia network significantly. You may be noticing slow speeds, regular disconnections or no connection at all. We are working to stabilize our network quickly and appreciate your patience while we do this.

In order to continue to stabilize our network, Adelphia will be taking additional measures that will impact a small group of Internet customers that use ping commands. Low-level pings (less than 100 bytes), DOS based commands used to determine Internet access in troubleshooting processes, will be blocked for an undetermined amount of time. If you use pings, you may not be able to ping anything outside the Adelphia network while this block is in place. This will not affect customers that do not use pings. As soon as the spread of the worm is under control and our network is stabilized, we will remove this block. We regret to have to put this block into effect but it is crucial to stabilizing the network and reducing the number if ICMP requests currently flooding our system due to the virus.

Please be assured that Adelphia is taking all possible measures to prevent the virus from impacting the Power Link network.

Thank you,

Adelphia Communications

The letter says pinging things outside of the adelphia network, I can't ping my default gateway. That's ok. I agree that this was the smart thing for adelphia to do. I just hope it is temporary.

I hope this is the reason I'm getting horrible packet loss. Sometimes pages won't even load! I lag like hell for brief periods of time in games like DAoC. If this isn't the cause, could someone help me try to fix the packet loss?

I would assume so. These virii are well written, and spread like mad. I too game, and have noticed lag increasing as the days go by. So far, up in my area, the network has remained stable, as in I haven't noticed anything too major happening. It' must be the new config file they are pushing out to the cable modems....

Re: Adelphia Blocking Pings

its the act of sending a packet of information to another computer that is timed.

if u know not of what it is or what it does then u need not worry.

I'm wondering how blocking pings will affect my gaming.. right now when I use a certain game browser it is not listing the pings to any of the servers which it was doing fine before Adelphia changed to blocking pings just a few days ago.

Just tried pinging my office, and it looks as if the ICMP filters have been removed.

The blocking of pings does not seem to affect actual gaming.. that's a good thing.

I ping Adelphia all the time, just to verify whether servers are online. Sometimes modem is online and servers can go offline, just "ping www.adelphia.net"

Um pinging www.adelphia.net says nothing about their servers being online...all it says is that the server that hosts the webpage (which is not anywhere near the place that service your internet) is online/offline

If you truly want to verify your local connection, leave a port open, then make a TCP / UDP connection attempt to verify connectivity. Another utility that can be used is a form of traceroute that uses TCP packets instead of ICMP....

checkout www.privacy.net.

That website has links to other websites that can do tcp/udp and various other scans to show you want is open on your connection. That's what I use to troubleshoot locally before i invest anymore time looking at my own situation.

There's a reason for that. That's the port where this week's virii come through. Port 139 was blocked to mitigate the spread of the mess.

Re: Adelphia Blocking Pings

i thought port 135 was the port that was the attack port.

people do use port 139 for other things besides viruses. anything we can do about it? many computers on cable and dsl ranges have had this happened but if u have a business line this doesnt seem to be effected. i.e. t1 +
