The zalman cools by passive cooling, where most others require a fan.
I was just suggesting something like this (see picture) to funnel more air to the fins. I know you tried it with some cardboard, but this might be a bit more effect. -- Click Me I'm Deviant! |

 | I tried something similar to that a LONG time ago when I had a valcano 6cu (oh did it suck). I tried a 60mm to 80mm converter. It caused too much pressure and the 80mm fan cooled worse than the stock 60mm fan.
Basically I'm saying bend the fins out a little to kind of look like the Zalman flower (but not to the extent) and still have the 80mm fan on it. |

The only problem I see with it is figuring out how to keep it in place securely on the heat sink. Other than that it's a good idea. |
