The zalman cools by passive cooling, where most others require a fan.

I was just suggesting something like this (see picture) to funnel more air to the fins. I know you tried it with some cardboard, but this might be a bit more effect.

I tried something similar to that a LONG time ago when I had a valcano 6cu (oh did it suck). I tried a 60mm to 80mm converter. It caused too much pressure and the 80mm fan cooled worse than the stock 60mm fan.

Basically I'm saying bend the fins out a little to kind of look like the Zalman flower (but not to the extent) and still have the 80mm fan on it.

That might work, but I'd never risk bending my fins...

The only problem I see with it is figuring out how to keep it in place securely on the heat sink. Other than that it's a good idea.
