depending on the forum color style, topics with lots of picture attachments were looking cluttered, especially with the box around any and all, so I removed the box and changed the wording, made it smaller, and got rid of "thumbnail click for full size" etc.

No argument here, just an opinion..I agree it looks cleaner except perhaps for those members who may still use a resolution of 800x600...then, if you have three attachments posted side by side, everything seems to run together..but as I stated earlier, change is inevitable and one has to adjust...

Looks clean. I think the main reason was the box. Made you feel constrained in it

I absolutely love it, I think it looks much better.
With the prior attachment format, I always thought the uploaded attachments really looked "out of place" in the post. Now they blend in more like if you had linked to an offsite image.
