it will do that if they are on your buddy list.

EDIT:
just verified it, it does this if the person is on your watched or buddy list. the only option you have is for encourage.

using IE6 on win 2k

It does not matter if they are on your buddie or watched list or not. The issue is with the classic theme. The quick fix is to switch to the modern theme or any other theme and it should go away. I have tested it with four different themes, and the problem is only resident in the classic theme.
