very frustrated...... : (

Hi. I recently got PowerLink and I have many stories(problems). First off, it started off with my email not working.(the tech set it up as a five character password when the min is six) I had to get that straightened out. Then they booted my modem. (I had a virus that I had to get rid of. I was on the phone w/tech support for THREE+ hours to get an answer of fix it yourself. So I did) And here's my current situation:

I can't get into certain sites. I can't get into google.com or mail.yahoo.com just to name a few. And here's the kicker. I CAN PING TO THEM!!! Hmm.... interesting. I was on the phone w/techs twice and I got no help. I want to say good things about them but I can't because of all of the problems I have/had.

He said it might be spyware or something else, but that is a VERY slim chance. I have the latest versions of AdAware, Spybot, and SpywareBlaster. My virus protection is etrust eZ AntiVirus. (good stuff, it saved me numerous times)
Thanks - Ben -

Yes I see that.

Search your hard drive for a file called hosts. Rename it to hosts1.
Reboot.

Try the stes you can't get into.

Oh I thought you said you got no help?

"There are like ten. How am I gonna know which one to change, so on and so forth..."

Open them one at a time with Notepad, you are looking for the one that is just called HOSTS. If you find one with entries thats your problem one.

enough with the sarcasm, please. and if I got help from the tech, why do I still have problems?

and i did open them all with wordpad. They all are "examples" of host stuff provided by microsoft. According to what it says anyway. So I can't fix my problem there.

Look under windows\system32\drivers\etc if you are running NT, W2K or XP.

thanks. Here is exactly what it says, just to make sure I'm looking at the right thing here:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

Your host file looks fine. Would you consider removal of spybot to rule it out as the source of the problem? You can always reinstall later.

MVM,

That's a question for the programmer, sorry. I'm just attempting to help you isolate the problem.

You mentioned having the latest versions of Spybot and other programs. Any of these updated recently? Or have you made any configuration changes to either of them recently?

MVM,

I think that is a strong indicator that one of the updates is the source of your problem. I use Spyware blaster, and updated it today as well, but have no problem getting to google.com or mail.yahoo.com. Please consider removing Spybot, you have nothing to lose but a few moments that it will take to reboot (if required, but I would reboot even if it is not a requirement) after the uninstall.

I had these problems when I first got Adelphia two weeks ago. I just got that sick of using dial-up to go to yahoo I finally decided to vent about it.

MVM,

Okay, did you reboot after the uninstall? And next, consider removing AdAware? Please hold off on reinstalling Spybot until the problem is resolved.

When you run a ping test to these sites, what IP address is showing? Seeing that ICMP is apparently not blocked from your location (as it is from some), run a trace route to the sites you are having problems with.

Hob's sarcasm is probably directed to the fact that Adelphia's support is not geared towards antivirus and such. You spoke highly of your etrust eZ AntiVirus, yet you had an infection; you claimed no help, yet they told you to check your hosts file (BTW, it should be in the location mentioned by sortofageek, and has no file extension).

I mean I got eZ Trust AV AFTER I got the virus.

Oh, and googles IP is: 216.239.41.99
mail.yahoo.com's ip is: 216.129.127.60

MVM,

Okay, have you uninstalled AdAware? And I should have asked this earlier, what happens when you try to surf to those two sites? What error messages do you get? Can we assume that you've cleared your cache?

What about the trace to the sites - the IP's look to be correct (eliminating a hosts issue). When you attempt to open these sites, what error is being reported in your browser? Does the page start to load, and then timeout? What browser are you running? Do you have a router or hardware firewall installed?

Well...it is a problem on your PC so it is technically not an adelphia issue...if it is XP..have you tried setting it back to a known working date?

This is a fine idea as are the others that have been suggested in this forum.
I am sorry the Host file idea did not work for you, sometimes it does as ugly programs have been known to Hijack browsers.
I am assuming you have also cleared your cache and removed any cookies.
Good Luck and let us know what solves it.

Charrog took the subject to Stevie saying

"Hob a little off topic but almost fell out of my chair when I saw your new avatar! However Stevie will definetly be missed"

I was playing around last night. By the time you read this I think Stevie will be back.

I am baffled with the subject in hand though, there appears to be no logic. I would like to see a trace to the affected sites, I'd like to know if the poster has reverse DNS on his IP. I am convinced it has to be some sort of spyware issue.
