What to post here, and what not to.

I think there are enough scams out there, and enough tools, that a dedicated group of individuals sharing information on a scammer or spammer, can accomplish something useful (shutdown, reportage to the correct company or ISP, etc).

Ideally someone brings us, as a new topic, some scam or other, (screenshot, URL or whatever), and more knowledgeable folks will be able to dig out further information, point to existing web resources, or do some collective head scratching and investigation.

If a particular hunt gets "out of control" I'll just shut down the topic for it is a fine line between digging for info and harassment of, potentially, an innocent victim.

Any other thoughts are welcome.

Hey Justin...I think this is a great idea, but yes, I do agree it needs close monitoring to prevent it from turning into a "witch hunt" I have seen this happen in other forums on this site.

I would contribute and normally threating type scams I use to report to the FBI's website, but maybe this will be a better place for other's to learn from them.

Just my $.0002.

This is a very good idea. It can be extremely frustrating to be burned, especially on the internet, and not know where to turn for help. As mentioned, we have some pretty good "head-scratchers" here who do not stop at the first brick wall they meet.

Legal research is my field, so I will be checking in daily to see if I can pitch in.

Re: The purpose of this forum

I'm a little confused about the difference between this forum and Stopping Spam. If spam is to be investigated here, what is the other forum for? Can someone explain it to me please?

First I'll just post a section of the header from the Stopping Spam Forum:

quote:
Discussions on email and other electronic spam in all its forms (inc. phone spam, SMS spam, IM spam, pop-ups, pop-unders, flash and java ads, etc.).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

**** NEW ****
If you need help tracking down a spammer or need help investigating the source of a scam, please post in the new
Spam and Scam Busters Forum!

I view the Stopping Spam Forum as a place to ask questions/discuss spam and ways to stop it from wreaking havoc in your e-mail inbox and life. You can also discuss the various spam filtering programs and how to use them. Probably much, much more ...

Here is Justin's explanation of the Spam and Scam Busters Forum:

So basically one forum is for discussion and the other is to go after them.

Hope that helps ...
