tpi join:2001-06-10 Trabuco Canyon, CA | Slow erratic performance in Orange County CA. Have seen other recent posts regarding this problem and thought we could have our own thread. Yesterday 9% packet loss on a 72 ping to yahoo.com. For several weeks slow, erratic page loads, with timeouts. Simple text pages with few small images slower to load than a typical dialup connection. Thought this pass on its own but it seems to be getting worse, not better. |

| Massive Packet Loss |
I am seeing it to, I am also in Trabuco Canyon, CA. It's real bad, here is what I have staying in Cox's own network....it sucks...Web pages sometimes just time out, email is slow to download and just regular old browsing is painfully slow.............and no word from COX, I thought they were the best, but my DSL at work, blows this out of the water.
Any Idea's? ~Tom

pluto2Premium join:2003-08-11 San Diego, CA | reply to tpi I am having the same problem in San Diego. Slow page loads, terrible speed tests 640/86 and 351/215 etc. My problem, however, appears to be tied to some node changes that occurred overnight on 8-19-03. I have talked with four phone techs and had multiple IM's back and forth with CoxTech1 (who has been very helpful). That resulted in two separate field service calls, and they appear to have identified the problem as of last Friday. The field techs (who have also been very professional) are coming back later this week to take care of the problem. Once these identified issues are resolved, I will post some more information on apparent causes and resolutions. |

| reply to tpi I won't repeat myself except to confirm that things are still very poor here in Foothill Ranch. Earthlink works. T-mobile works. STSN works. Worm my a$$. "Captain, I'm picking up alien intruders on the scanners." "Battle stations. Mr. Scott, block some more ports." "We're runnin' out of ports, cap'n! We can't block many more." "Dammit Scottie, divert power from the shields if you have to, but block those ports!" "Aye, sir. Blocks engaged, but I can't promise it'll work." -- Still beating, after all these years. |

omar93 join:2001-10-17 Mission Viejo, CA | reply to tpi Yep, we've noticed the same thing here in mission viejo, orange county. web browsing sucks!! its very erratic, sometimes it'll come in quick and then a second later it'll slow to a crawl. all sorts of pages are like that, not just one or two, yahoo, ebay etc.... |

| having similar problems here in dana point area. which sucks because we usually don't have many problems here when northern oc areas do. my pings and traceroutes to dslreports are horrible. yet speed tests come out pretty high. at times even sites like yahoo and google will take a bit to start loading and occasionally i'll get a dns error and have to refresh. and check this out »/quality/nil/1153001
what's the deal lately with cox in oc? [text was edited by author 2003-09-04 20:11:59] |

| reply to tpi Here's a novel approach taken by some institutions in response to irresponsible users running sloppily written operating systems: shut off the infected users and charge them for disinfecting services. | reply to tpi Good news, the Cox status page shows no problems in California. Everything must be fixed. [/sarcasm] -- Still beating, after all these years. |

 | Yeah. They even removed that thing about connection loss on Port 135. I'm sure the fact that I still can't reach my Exchange server must be an unrelated problem. -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition." |

HankIts all relativePremium join:2002-05-21 Burlington, WV | Still slow here in Cox DC land. Since Cox is taking the approach of being patient with their Customers this time I think it will be a very long time before speeds return to normal. If anyone hasn't pinged my IP yet and are disappointed about it, you could send a PM with your IP so I can add to my logs. But, please wait until I purchase a new 160GB hard drive.-:) |

 | reply to tpi It was decent today, but is horribly slow tonight. Any insight from the Cox technicians? Why so bad in OC? What's the prognosis for a fix, please? -- Still beating, after all these years. |

 | reply to CampMaster That's exactly how my ping plots looked today as well. Nothing consistent packet loss wise. Can't exactly point at a source for the PL. |

CampMasterRather Be Camp'nPremium join:2001-05-16 Trabuco Canyon, CA | Talked to Level 2 support as I am VERY tired of this poor performance, it's horrid. Tier 2 had no explanation of my problems and make it sound like its me and this is new, not related to any worm. No known problems. I have a ticket open and will follow up in 48hrs.
Checked SBC DSL, says my line needs more checking to see if it's available in my area. Does the fact I have COX phone service make a difference for SBC DSL?
Already dumped their TV for Satellite, guess internet and phone is the next step....
I am preparing to jump ship.

tpi join:2001-06-10 Trabuco Canyon, CA | Please keep us informed about the DSL options. Cox has been reliable in the sense that I always have some kind of internet connection.
However some kind of tuning in Cox system has not favored smooth initial requests of files. I get much better pings than with @home, but page loads tend to be slower. Web pages call for multiple imbedded images, frequently from different servers. Lately as Camp Master has said, the quality of service during the evening hours has been horrible.
I hope someone from Cox reads this thread and looks into the general issue of sluggish initial page loads coupled with fast ping times. I have not noticed this with other cable or DSL connections. It is ongoing over the past year-even during best times, something isn't "quite right." |
