| Driving me crazy
Im really trying but I need help. I have AOL Plus,I run speed test and average 480/80. Not great but I can live with it. About 2 months ago my comp. started to hang up or freeze for about 30 to 1 min. on every 4th or 5th link. I read a lot of ideas and none worked, I downgrade to IE 5.0 from 5.5, when I run tweek test says i should set mtu to 1492, but when doing the DOS test shows 1362 is highest before packet fragmentation. I have a dell pentium 3 500, Aol plus through verizon. »monitor.dslreports.com/tweak/blo···ia=pppoe I dont know if tweek is the answer to the stalls or hang ups. I wanted to get cable but not available in my part of brooklyn. If anyone could help I would be very greatful, Ive wasted enough time and realize im over my head with this problem. |

| You need to do the fake IP address thing for your network adapters. You go into the adapter properties area on your puter and put in a fake ip address for the one or 2 that pertain to the modem you have. Cut and paste for teh fix:
Many users have reported a problem with both the internal and external browser hanging at a blank screen with a "Done" message for up to a few minutes while browsing web sites. This is a known issue with PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) setups where the network adapters in use will pause to search for a DHCP server which does not exists. The job of a DHCP server is to assign IP addresses, and since the network adapters by default are set to "Obtain an IP Address Automatically," they will continue to search for a DHCP server so they can be assigned an IP address, even though this is unnecessary. A resolution for this problem is to manually assign an IP address to the pertinent network adapters, which will prevent them from continually making these DHCP requests. Specific steps for this process are listed below:
Note: This process may require your Windows Installation CD, please make sure you have this CD handy.
1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network > Configuration tab. Here you will see a list of several adapters.
2. Scroll down this list until you reach the adapters beginning with "TCP/IP" -- there should be several.
3. You want to look for the TCP/IP adapters which correspond to your DSL modem. If you are using the Efficient Networks SpeedStream modem, look for: - TCP/IP > SpeedStream 3060/4060 Miniport ATM/ADSL Adapter - TCP/IP > Efficient Networks Virtual Miniport If you are using the Actiontec modem, look for: - TCP/IP > Actiontec Home DSL USB LAN Adapter
4. Click once on your modem's TCP/IP adapter to highlight it, click Properties, then select the IP Address tab.
5. Select Specify an IP Address which will activate the IP Address and Subnet Mask boxes.
6. You will need to enter an IP Address and Subnet Mask for the adapter. For the IP Address, enter "150.100.100.27" and for the Subnet Mask enter "255.255.0.0", then click OK.
If you have more than one TCP/IP adapter for your DSL modem, as is the case with the Efficient Networks modems, repeat steps 4 - 6 for the other adapter.
7. Click OK to close the Network control panel window, which will be followed by a message that your network settings are being updated, then a prompt to restart your computer. Click Yes to restart. (If it prompts you for your Windows CD during this update, place the CD in and click OK)
Once your system is finished rebooting, sign back on to AOL Plus DSL and the browser hanging problem should be resolved! |

Anon | reply to SMCinAZ Sorry about the delay however, I just have to respond to this. If you would have read the directions, you would have read that by putting an IP of 10.255.255.10 and Class C of 255.255.255.0, you would have never had these problems. For your information, I am a tech support rep and I did know about this issue. However, I will be laid off on Thursday and apologize for any inconvenience you may have in the future. Have a great adventure. Please read before you complain. Makes everyone think you know something. CHOW!! |
