Technique! Week 9

Welcome to Technique! Week 9. Week 8 is officially closed for new photos. Special thanks to climbers See Profile and seagreen See Profile for sharing their techniques for turning a photograph into a watercolor painting.

The goal of this thread is for one of the members of the forum to share a photographic technique with the rest of the forum. Then we can all practice this technique & upload our results. The technique doesn't have to be limited to digital editing. It can be related to other things as well, like exposure, depth-of-field, etc. A good example of a technique thread can be found here.

Anyone? Anyone?

how's this? not sure if I followed the tutorial exactly...

I think I needed to make my canvas larger, and why does it look like there are pieces underneath? I used the move tool a bit...I don't really understand the difference between merge visible, down and flatten image I think...

profe -- I think it looks great! Look at your layers. Make sure you have a solid white layer sitting above your background layer. This way, when you move your pieces of the picture around, you'll see white and not the original picture underneath. Hope that helps out. Give it a try.

I tried this, but when I select the upper-right corner of the picture with the marquis tool, PS complains that the selection is EMPTY! Any suggestions?

Bubbajoegump - make sure that your background layer is selected when you do that. Double check that & see if that helps.

That's it, I think I forgot the white layer....but this might be a variation if you WANTED to make it looked stacked for some reason...thanks fritty!

Glad it worked, profe! I think that there really is not one definitive right answer with these. I like your version just fine. It might even be interesting to try it out with different shapes instead of just the rectangles, too. This is a lot of fun!

Bubba -- look at your layers box. You have Layer 2 selected. Click on the background layer to make it a dark gray to select it. Then try it again.

It'd probably have been better if I didn't get carried away with the "white" selections at the bottom. Oh well, it was fun trying! I'm gonna try again...
