I dont think they had this one in mind because it looks like the focus was more on open source but it still definitely deserved a mention. Thanks Smile.

CMS stands for "Content Management System".

At least thats what I read last Unless it has changed its definition

You use it to run a website basically. So you don't have to do the coding yourself. It dynamically addresses issues that you may have to do by hand without it, like making pages for articles, coding a comments section.

You see CMSes everywhere. DSLR has a particularly expansive CMS.

What about the possibility of a poll or some type of rating on these CMS's, would be nice to here from people that use them about the pro's & cons of each flavor?
I tried a couple of them & would like to here other peoples opinions.

I don't really think a poll could ever cover all of what the user community thinks..because there are just *that* many twirks..it would do better to maybe check for something like "which CMS do you use?"..other than providing people with a 100 question questionare

There is another you might want to add. It's called Back-End.

I am using it on my »morph3ous.net site. The plus is that is is simple to use with inline WYSIWIG editing. The downside for some (not for me for this particular site) is that it is more about publishing documents than having a community.

Figured I'd add this, because it wasn't here.

From the zope.org site:
quote:

Zope is an open source application server for building content managements, intranets, portals, and custom applications.

From the plone.org site:
quote:
Plone is an open source Enterprise Content Management System (CMS) that runs on top of Zope and CMF
I haven't used either (yet) but I've just signed up for a zope account on »www.zettai.net/ and hope to be getting my hands dirty with zope sometime soon

It's difficult finding anything open source or free with CF. From my experience, CF is usually reserved for use in companies due to the cost of it (among other reasons). You have as much luck finding quality CF FAQ's, personal blog sites, help sites and such.

But, here are some "not for free" ones :

ektron
simplycms
sparkplug
hot banana

Prices range from $100 for a single domain license up to a grand or more for multi-domain/enterprise licenses.

We use Interwoven with ColdFusion just fine. Not free, but works well once it's up and running.

For small to medium sized businesses, take a look at www.elementscms.com. I have spoken with several companies in California that use them and absolutely love it.

I know elementCMS (singular) has already been posted, but they are two completely different companies.

Bordering on . I think theres at least a few of us that post in ATU (All Things Unix) as well.

Honestly though, I don't think there are enough of us here that use .NET that we would know of any forums. Think about how many .NET questions you have seen in the last week--or month even, compared to PHP or even Perl. Heck, I think there are more Python related question

My best guess is that we often see unix php-enabled servers recommended because most of us that post here also seem to be cheap

The .NET additions are wholeheartedly welcomed here however

Re: Listing of CMS / Forums for Webmasters

hehe... I know. I was more or less joking... it's pretty obvious that there aren't too many .net developers in this forum (or on bbr it seems). But I'm always here if anyone has any questions!

Not that I'm in love with MS (I do use php and other stuff), but their .NET stuff is pretty cool. As far as costs... it is mostly perception that isn't always true. All you have to buy is the server software and everything else is free. (Web edition is around $350 »hardwarecentral.dealtime.com/xPO···20740721) You can run mySQL or any other DB to power it too.

The iBuySpy Portal is rather limited IMO. I haven't used DotNetNuke yet. Never heard of the Rainbow Portal. It's Contact and Discussion modules look similar to iBuySpy's.

This forum is mostly OSS language oriented - PHP, Perl, Python, etc. There are more PHP/MySQL users (and questions) than ASP.NET and ASP. I use ASP.NET everyday but I guess I know it enough not to have to ask questions. Either that or I know how to STFW and RTFM

Re: Listing of CMS / Forums for Webmasters

Yes, iBuySpy Portal IS limited, which is why DotNetNuke and Rainbow Portal are built on the basic principles of iBuySpy but extend the feature set. One is a GPL licence and one is a BSD licence. There are more ASP/ASP.NET developers than you think... and we shouldn't discourage them from asking questions here. (which is why we should list some asp.net open source projects along with the others)

I am making a CMS from PHPBB.com's board. BTW, the board I need anyway. I thought that it would be ambiguous to have two different systems, one for website and another for the bulletin board. Easy enough to do, post in a hidden forum, then read it from MySQL with PHP into a website.

I've worked with Mambo Open source pretty happily for a while. Another Enterprise CMS that I've known some happy companies with is Percussion Software / Rhythmyx (they're more open source / XML standards based).
