| [Home Networking] Netgear FVS318, PPPoE, & Earthlink
So Earthlink performs some update over the weekend (it was really Bellsouth swapping out a card in the CO I'm told), and my Netgear FVS318 no longer works using PPPoE. In fact, I have 5 different clients around North East Atlanta who's netgear FVS318's have dropped them from the Earthlink Network.
Earthlink says call Netgear, and Netgear originally said to call Earthlink - of course. I finally did go up the chain at Netgear however and they are quite interested now. They thought my WAN port was mysteriously bad, then determined that it wasn't. I told them I had plenty of other Netgear devices in the area that weren't working all of a sudden and that piqued their interests. They are suppose to have Oz (the man behind the curtain) call me back within 24 hours.
I was wondering if anyone else was using the same configuration and was experiencing the same problems. I'm hoping a firmware revision will resolve this. It really sucks as I can't IPSec into my networks now. |

| If you are in the Bellsouth area, you have been updated to BBG (aka L2TP) which is a different twist on PPPoE (as I understand it). If your Router quit working and there are no Firmware update for it from the manufacturer, then you will need a new Router.

I had same problem. I tried calling Netgear several times. Sent them all the details. So far no solution. I just bought a new router. |

Hi, The firmware update is from 1991 and won't help at all. I believe and talking with a linksys tech for 20 minutes that any router currently on the market will NOT support Eartlinks/Bellsouth L2TP new software. So much for networking the connection to share it with your wife and kids. All routers out there will probably not work if you are in the Earthlink/Bellsouth area. There is $250 flushed down the toilet.

I know the feeling. I to have a netgear FVS318 which quit working when bellsouth did there upgrade. Netgear tech. support is a joke. For once EL support was quite helpful. They at least worked with me to find the problem. All netgear can say is reset you router. Last time I buy Netgear! |

Not true, my Linksys BEFSR41 running firmware 1.45.6 (worked on the L2TP with older firmwares) works just fine in addition to my Cisco 1605R router running IOS 12.3(1). -- "You leave the same impression of something beautiful, but annihilating." -Sylvia Plath |
